I recently started bowling in a wood house again after 2 years of bowling on well maintained synthetics. I'm having problems on the 40 feet of fresh oil they put down. I've had my best success here lately with my Blazing Inferno drilled label leverage. It's clean enough through the grabby heads and then doesn't over react when it gets to the backends. This is usually good for the first couple of games. As they begin to break down I can't keep the blazing right of the headpin. If I switch to my dry lane stuff (Big Hit, Slate Gargoyle, Barbed Wire, or Classic Zone Red Pin) They don't carry the ten until they dry out some more.
I need something in between the Blazing and the weaker balls. I need length with arc but still some recovery when I miss right. I thought my Sonic X would fit here, but it's too skid snappy.
Thoughts?

I have a TPC Shooter for medium-dry conditions, the early version (see my review). This is a pretty strong ball, but very controllable on this condition when anything else hooks by the pocket or simply goes spasmic. Recovers from anywhere, but makes a strong move with the drilling I have on it.

I think it would fit well under the BI conditions, since in the house I use to play the Shooter many folks have great success with the BI.

If you want a new ball - do not laugh - consider a pearl reactive Power Groove. These are good balls for light oil. They lack a low RG core, but the coverstock is strong and should provide you with any recovery you might ask for when your BI gets out of control.

FWIW,
Based on the balls you're using, last week I've found my Slate Blue Gargoyle worked fine (for the first night of summer league) on old wood lanes, when my Ego was too early and my Sonic-X was also too over/under.

Tonight is the 2nd night; so who knows what surprises tonight's conditionign will bring ...

I have an Ego. The breakpoint is too sharp on this condition. Too much entry angle = funky leaves. I need something with length and an even arc. I had hoped the Red Pin Classic Zone would work here, but it doesn't like dry heads with carrydown. I have 2 of the RPCZ and one is a bit early and the other is too late. I've liked the Power Grooves in the past, but they really turn too hard and late here. I want a weakish (clean) cover with a strong but even revving core. Thoughts?

Bob,
I'm a bit of a hack. I throw the ball no thumb. I'm one dimensional. My ball tends to not push down the lane very well. I generally stand about 15 boards left of center. The ball crosses the arrows at about 12-13 out to about 5-8. I can't get much deeper with my feet. Dang ball return!

If I try to play deeper at the arrows, the ball won't push far enough to the right. The Blazing isn't burning up. As the lanes dry out it just turns too hard once it breaks. The Blazing is actually one of the stronger balls I throw as anything stronger hooks out of the building on the heaviest oil I see around here. The problem with most of my weaker stuff is abruptness of the breakpoint. They slide, slide, slide, and then a crazy left turn. Bad pocket % and carry. I think I may dull down my Slate Blue Gargoyle. Maybe that will be even enough and still hit.
We'll see.
