They are acrylic bowling balls.  Very hard, go very straight.  Haven't been made in many years, as far as I know.  I drilled one once in the later 80's or early 90's for a guy.  I had to squirt water on the drill bits, while drilling, got super hot.

Don't think they were made in 16lbs.  Made in Japan.  I think those 14lb 7 oz were about has heavy as they would/could be made.

Tour/Regional Champ Rick Minier had one he used for a spare ball until the ball registration thing started with the PBA.  I threw his in a Pro Am at a regional one time.  It didn't hook much, kinda loped down the lane.  Great spare ball though, on just about anything.

Not worth $1500 to me, but maybe to somebody!

Pro shop in the area has one on display. The entire family ( 5 guys) have used it as a spare ball over the last 15 years or so.

Not a mark on it, ball is super hard as Mike stated.

Rare then and rare now are 2 different things.  There were alot of 68' Camaro's in Mint condition back in the day as well.

Are they worth that price to the masses?  Not likely.  However, there may be someone out there to whom the price represented a bargain.  To them, they would obviously be worth the expense.

It is not unlike the debates on another forum I belong to regarding the occasional '90 or '91 Miata that appears with less than a thousand miles and a price tag of around $8-12K.  To some, they represent an overpriced used car while others view it as a dirt cheap 'new' car.  Is it collectible?  Not likely and probably never will be except and unless it was one of the color concepts (Miata people know what they are) or a documented first-off.  Will it be unique?  Only in the same way that some view the 240Z, the TR-6 or an MGB.

No matter the commodity, there is a market and with that market comes a price that someone may pay even if most view it as overpriced...
