Are we wrong????
« on: July 16, 2003, 08:03:59 PM »
I want to hear everyone's opinions not just the pro's on the site.  Are we sometimes to harsh in our criticism of the bowlers we love to watch on tv?  What about other bowlers we just see around the center.  Should we cut them more slack in the choices they make?

I know sometimes I can be very negative and harsh.  Maybe I am too hard on people without maybe full knowledge.  What does everyone else think of these senarios

I think it is easy to be critical of those we watch on tv, because as amateurs, we look up to them.  Think about it, when they are bowling good on a telecast, don't we usually look to see what ball they are throwing?  We base alot of our equipment purchases just from watching as to what is making the shows on a weekly basis.  So many people swear by Lane #1, but how many times have you seen a Saw on tv?  We see Storm, primarily, mixed in with Columbia, Brunswick, Track, and Ebonite just to name the main ones.  Every once in awhile, you get to see Dynothane, and Visionary, and doesn't Danny Wiseman use Revolution?  But, have not seen Lane #1 as of yet.  Take Kendra Gaines the other night as an example......she was going good with the Vicious Pearl against Gianotti-Block and then decided to change over to a Sling Blade, only to struggle and eventually losing to Michelle.  To some of us, that may look as though not only did she make a bad decision, but also that in her attempt to discretely market that S.B., was that ball a piece of junk?  No, not really.  But, there are people who decide on ball purchases based on what they see on tv being used by a pro.  The average consumer will think that if that ball does not work for them, how is it going to work for me?  So, yes, it is easy to be critical of a professional bowling on tv, because they are supposed to be the elite, and therefore people have a high regard to their scoring abilities and decision making skills.

Andy, ...of course we're wrong !!  We're on a website.....most of us practically HACKS, w'ere not on the professional tour, we don't know what it's like and we we'rent there!  And, we don't know what we would have done in THAT situation.......it's easy on TV!

Think about it.....
"why did he make that pass"
"how can you swing at that crap"
Etc, etc, etc,......

It's easy watching it on TV......armchair bowlers !

A true professional knows how difficult it is, and will dismiss the negative comments from the fans.
Now - this wasn't a TV show, but let me give you an example:
Last year at a PWBA regional, the lane man told me that "the lanes will have a little bit more oil than last year", with a big grin on his face.
Unbeknownst to me, the shot they planned on putting out was a sport condition reverse block. I don't know how many units, but it was a LOT.
The tournament LEADER, a touring pro, wasn't plus for the tournament. It was an extremely difficult shot - with single board accuracy required, and incredible speed consistency.
Spectators were constantly saying things like "boy, these ladies aren't very good, are they?"
That night, for the pro am, they put out the house shot. Of course, John and Jane Amateur knew they were better. So while they tossed off their 190 no tap scores, the ladies shot 878,866,830something... No tap, but STILL!!!

I really, really wish that they had left the shot the same as the tournament shot for the pro am... Maybe the "house" bowlers would have faced reality...

Bowling? Of course it's a sport.

When we watch a golfer on TV and he elects to go for the green in 2 when he is 250 out over water, if he dumps it in the lake, we may feel he should have played conservatively and laid up.  We may not know that in practice rounds he had that same shot and carried the green without any problem.  Now, should we be critical of his decision?

come now...it was only a defining moment.  Only problem was that Cup let the moment define him

Dear Bones and shocked.  I have decided you are right.  I am indeed a hack and yutz.  Therefore, I will confine my posts to the non-bowling section and keep my opinions on equipment and the game to myself.

I have bowled in two proams in the last 6 months.

One a woman's.  The day before I had been spanking around the young bucks in some little pot games with my league type equipment(read big flare setup).

I came in very confident that I would show the ladies how to throw.
Promptly I was assigned the worst pair in the house(for me).  I went out and over undered myself to about a 4xx.  Total embarrasment.  Straight ball bowlers had a much easier time of it!  (The condition reminded me of world team challenge shots I had done well at).  (I had only seen my house wet for years!).

So when the men's regional came I brought a mix of control drilled(hole on pap) and low diff and high diff equipment.

After one ball I picked up that it was a heavy oil heads, short pattern with no buff.  Out came a dull Ti Hawk with a deep weighthole on PAP.

Luckily for me the tournament came equipped with a heckler for me.
:"I really enjoy that".

"Oh here's the big money winner" "let's see the big money winner against the pros", "heard the ladies showed you a thing and two"  Fun stuff!

After I finished practice with about 6 in a row and started the game with 7 in a row finished with about 257 scratch!  No no taps just strikes!  THe heckler dissappeared.  I finished real close to 700 scratch and near 800 no tap.

All around me the local boys were throwing no tap scores of near 450.
Real series in the mid 300s!!!!!!!  Averages over 190.

It was sort of fun.

The pros killed the shot and I would have maybe been in the upper third!
No lefties could handle this shot and the righty crankers with power equipment looked like fools!

Be prepared for anything but in general I think a hard transition at the end of the pattern can often be expected.

As to my heckler, he lost interest.  I went and found him, asked why he didn't stay!  I also offered to bowl for a couple of bucks that day!  His reply,
"Not today!"  We now have very cordial relations!  People are interesting!
