Title: Are you man enough?
Post by: mainzer on September 08, 2008, 07:55:25 AM
Their has been alot of talk about handicap and scratch around here the last couple of weeks I have found some of the comments and thoughts on the subject matter very interesting. which brings me to the question, Are you tough enough to bowl scratch and be competitive? Or do you shy away because you think you are not good enough? Also if you average say 200-215 why aren't you in a Scratch league? you are more than good enough.

My answer... Scratch leagues, all the way. No excuses just pure talent vs talent match play format. It seems like I bring my game face in Scratch leagues more so than handicap which I have a hard time being fired up for.

I've bowled in uncapped scratch leagues for 25 years now.

Never been the best but I'm competitive.

Still bowl in a handicap league for kicks and giggles and don't worry about the results much, just try to bowl my best.

I am bowling my first scratch league this year and am pretty excited about it after shooting 675 the first week.  It isn't a huge number, but my goal is to average 215 and I'm on my way.

I grew tired of the handicap leagues and after bowling in only a couple mixed leagues with my wife over the past few years, I felt the need to get into the scratch scene and work on my game to bring it up a level and start competing in some scratch tournaments around here as well.

I'm man enough!  Just that I'm a poor man this year so no bowling for me.  it sucks, I'm kinda missing it.

A few years ago I was in a scratch match play league on Friday nights.

It was a triples league I averaged around 205 and won about 55% of my matches.

As a whole our team didn't do well because my teammates were matched up against better bowlers.  It was either due to bad luck, bad bowling, or bad match ups.

Needless to say that league was a lot of fun, each week finding out who had it in them to dig deeper and bowl better.

That league disbanded, however I'd bowl in another league like that again.  All I need to do is find teammates I can count on and a league to bowl in.

"I'm A Man I'm 40" I'm actually 25. In my area none of the houses offer scratch leagues. I would love to try one out. We do have a pbax doubles leagues coming up though. It's handicapped 80% of 220. I saw some guys bowl in it once before who I thought were primo avg 185-190. So i'm looking to try and hit that 180 mark at least.

May not be good enough to compete week in, week out. Would bowl in one if one was on my side of town at a time I could make it. No scratch leagues over on my side of town, the good ones are 40-50 miles on the other side of town at 6:00-6:30 and I don't get off until after 6:00.

Not sure about others, but I find myself plenty competitive enough for scratch leagues and have never backed down from anyone on the lanes.  I think the main problem isn't whether or not people aren't good enough, or talented enough, but it is because in today's bowling environment, you don't have enough scratch leagues.  I think a lot of the people on here telling people they don't have the balls to bowl scratch are people new to the sport or even in juniors.  I know there are plenty of scratch junior programs in my area, but not much in the way of scratch adult leagues and to insinuate people don't have what it takes to compete in scratch when they average 200+ is childish.  If you have good scratch leagues where you are from, good for you.  Just realize not everyone is so lucky.

I bowl one scratch league and one handicap league.  My company used to pick up the tab for the handicap one (now pays about 20%), so it's a cheap way to have a second more social night.  For tournaments, if it's my money paying, it's scratch only.  If I get beat head to head, so be it.  I'm far from the top dog in my town on a THS, but I can hold my own on the tougher shots.

I average 220 and I bowl in handicap leauges for two reasons.

1. To bowl with my woman.
2. The challenge.

I'm very clear that in handicap leauges 220 puts me at a HUGE disadvantage because all of the handicap goes to the other teams I bowl against, but I love the disadvantage because in order to win I have to shoot the lights out and it makes the other team work as well. The point of bowling is to reach 300 or 800 and to me thats worth bringing my game face whether it be scratch or handicap.

I wouldn't mind scratch all the way....Joe Bowler might not agree though lol

1) Nobody I bowl with would be interested in scratch leagues except me
2) I don't even know of any scratch leagues around me

I love bowling scratch, scratch tournaments are great.  It's just so hard to find anyone around here who doesn't want the handicap crutch.

I perfer scratch leagues, they actually make me show up and bowl.  And it actually puts you with bowlers of your own caliber, i always bowl terrible in handicap leagues because i go up against someone with a 150 average and i just dont focus because of it.

I'm man enough to bowl scratch, but I don't.  Why?  Because it would get really old bowling against myself in a one-man league.

there are no true scratch leagues around here, maybe that's why i'm only bowling maybe 10 weeks this season.

I don't bowl scratch because it interferes with my son's soccer practice (I'm helping to coach the team).
I would like to bowl scratch, but with just 1 scratch league in the nearby house, I can't make it due to the schedule conflicts with the kids. Family first.

My friend tried to put together a scratch league this fall and we couldn't get the bowlers together to make it happen.  Several 215+ guys backed out.

No one wants to bowl a scratch league I guess.  No matter how good the format, prize fund, extras are.

After bowling handicap ABT tournaments for a few years, I finally decided to try regionals a few years back.  I loved the feeling of seeing everyone's scores on the monitors and knowing that was their score, no wondering how many pins they got, or getting beaten out by someone and wondering if they just had a good day, or were sandbagging, in one tournament club there was a guy that I could tell had to be a 190-200 average bowler by how well of a ball he threw that was getting 24 pins a game to my 3, having to feel I need to shoot 700 scratch at least to make the cut was getting extremely frustrating.  I still bowl a handicap league with my wife, and whenever sweepers comes around, I just try to not focus on the money, or who shot what, and just do as well as I can, because it can drive you nuts sometimes.  Would never bowl another handicap tournament again.

I'm bowling in a 3 man Scratch, house shot, league... and a 3 man Scratch, sport shot, league this year...

Come to think of it, in the past 2 years, the only handicap league i've bowled is the summer PBA exp league.

Ok i dont wanna sound disrespectful, but why do people assosicate 200-210 with a sratch bowler any more. If you dont avg 220 or better your not even in the top 15-20% of the bowlers in america. The house shots out there are a joke now-a-days, when u miss by 5 and can stillg et the ball back to the hole, c'mon who are you kidding?

They should base "scratch" on what the pro's(PBA)average the previous year.  True, they bowl on much tougher conditions but I'm guessing their average will be around 220 or so.

I think there is only one scratch that I know of in Evansville, I would love to get in it right now, becasue I know I could be compeptitive, but it is pretty far away, and already bowl in Eville once a week.

I bowl one mixed league with wife (handicap league). Don't bowl in any other leagues. Only handicap tournaments I do are the local Association and State....everything else Scratch.

I wish we had a Scracth League in my area I would definitely join it.
