Need help about a bowling job!!!
« on: April 12, 2004, 08:49:01 AM »
In my small town, we have 2, 8 lane alleys. With so little space, there is no seperate bar. Thus, meaning to work there I must be 18 or 21 dont remember. I am a young one, and love to bowl. I woudl really like to get some kind of job at a bowling alley. But, if I cant work behind the counter, then any suggestions on what I could do?? LMK. Thanks in advance. Kyle

you're pretty much screwed till ur 16.. unless you work under the table, i would try to get in by doing some maintainance stuff, or try to learn the machines. They really aren't that complicated, I loved working on them rather than dealing with the morons up front.

The machines can be quite dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.  Find someone who does to show you where you can step or put your feet and where not to.  I own my own center, and sometimes I would MUCH rather be in the back.  I can usually make the machines do what I want them, but you can't do that with people!!!
If you are interested in the machines, check out www.bowltech.com .

My first job was at a bowling center when I was 17 as a porter (cleaning bowling area before, during, and after leagues).  But that was in a house that had no bar so I am not sure what the state laws would be on that as far as age requirements.   I started out a bit older than most of the others that worked there, a few were 15 and 16.

Why dont you inquire at the centers themselves?   At least that way they will know that you are interested.

More than likely they won't let you work out back with the machines until your 18 due to how dangerous they can be.  I'm not sure if there are state laws or regulations against it though.  It may just be a general rule of thumb in my area.  I've worked in the back at 2 local centers, still working at that 2nd one.

Thanks for all the help. I'll discuss it with the local alley owners. All I want is paid in free open bowling! Then again, they could lose some serious money that way! Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately thanks to some new laws in some states even being near or around beer is illegal.  However, you could get a job working as a pin chaser or scoring assistant. I mean its not a really glamouris thing but its a job.  Working the counter however is a bit of a problem many bowling centers will not allow someone to work the register or be at the counter unless they really know the person. Its just that htey have a hard time with young employees with that much responsiblitie.  Not saying your not but thats what the owners look at.  But I would try as a pin chaser or even a scoring assistant doesnt hurt to ask

I am pretty sure that OSHA regulations say you must be 18 to work the back.  If you want to work in a bowling center, I would suggest being a pinchaser (Low-level name for mechanic).  Usually the pay is approximate 75 cents to a dollar more an hour then a counter person or snack bar attendant, plus you don't have to deal with customers. YOu will get bored and lonely at times, but as far as headaches, they are more reduced.

More than likely you can't get an real job at the center yet because of your age. If it is free games you are after then I am willing to be that if you told the manager you would do some odd jobs for free passes he would hook you up. Thinks like clean the parking lot, scrape up gum, clean up inside. I am sure there are several things you could do to earn free pases. I know you would at my center.
