Please if anybody has a remedy for this....!!!
« on: October 20, 2004, 01:49:18 AM »
I started bowling when I was a kid and stopped when I was about 16.  Well I took about 10 years off and this is my 3rd season back.  I dont ever remember anything like this as a kid but when I bowl now I get very bad pain in the front of my upper knee and lower thigh areas.  I have tried everything to get this to go away!!!  I have tried bowling more to hopefully strengthen what I thought was possibly a weak muscle and taking time off but nothing works.  If I bowl more then once a week the pain is tremendous!!!  Now keep in mind, I work out and stretch 5 days a week and today after practicing on Monday (because I have been in a slump) it started hurting during my leg workout as well.  At one point, brought this up to my chiropractor beccause I had heard something about my cyatic nerve.  He said that it wasnt relevant and that if that was the case the pain would be in different areas.  I also brought this up to my Doc and I think he thought I was crazy, because here I am this guy that works out all the time, but has a hard time bowling???   Now a couple of my buddies will get a pain in there leg as well, but its not as frequent and not as severe as what I get.  I need to know if there is anyone out there that has had this and may possibly know a solution to getting rid of it because at this point I am at a loss!!!  I feel that I have tried everything with no results.  i have even tried taking tylenol, aleve, and advil before I bowl and those dont even phase it!  So P...L...E...A...S...E if anyone has any has had this problem before or even known anyone with this problem that has worked through it please let me know!!!  Input, suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated and as always thanks for taking the time to read my post!!!

Also, just to add...it doesnt hurt while Im actually throwing the ball but when I am done and in between frames is when it hurts the most.  If I dont bowl for about an hour then the pain is very faint.  Hope this helps.

Try doing some exercise to strengthen the leg muscle, like bike riding...

Im not doctor, so I cant really say what is causing it, but maybe a knee brace would help you while bowling. Your knee just has too much pressure/stress being put it probably. A knee brace may help. Again, Im not doctor so this is just a suggestion.

The reason I wouldnt advise you to exercise it alot is because it may be something like tendonitis, or something of the sort, and exercising it too much could irritate it and make it even worse. I would talk to your doctor, and if he doesnt do anything....well from what you said I'd find another doctor, because if you say somethings wrong and he says your crazy just because you exercise hes not doing his job.

I work out 5 days a week and my leg day is Wednesday.  I am 5'5" 165lbs.  I know I do have a deep knee bend.  I am a cranker with med to high revs average ball speed or maybe ave to high ball speed now that I switched to 14lb. 4 step approach that I would say is normal speed because I dont run to the line!  Hopefully this helps.  Thanks for all of the replies everyone, any info I can get at this point is helpful!

Yeah, It's not your cyatic nerve.  The pains would be in the back of your legs,
at least that's where mine is.

How is your slide? Is it long, short, smooth, or jerky.
Do you stick alot?

IF you stick, or if the approaches are slow(sticky) you might be putting
extra pressure on the knee area as you come to a stop.

As far as fixing it, I wore a brace for a while, and did a bit of walking before
I bowled to get that area warmed up instead of bowl on it cold.

With a deep knee bend, you are flexing the muscle as you come to a stop.  To feel what I am talking about, you can sit on a chair with your feet flat and
legs at 90 degrees(shoes on).  Try to push your feet forward, with your hands on your knee/ lower thigh area you can feel a muscle flexing, that is probable the one you are talking about.

You need to get it warmed up before you bowl.

One other thing, what kind of leg workout do you do?

Have you looked at any video of your slide (or lack of it) yet?  A deep knee-bend with a sudden stop is not healthy for muscles, it is like jerking when you stretch instead of stretching and holding.  If you have a quick approch, it will only add to the problem.  I'm speaking from personal experience.  I had the same problem up until about a year ago.  The solution for me was developing better footwork and a smooth, comfortable slide.

That would make sense if it hurt all the time, but it normally doesnt hurt when I work out just if I bowl a day or 2 before I work out on legs.

I have this problem when my balance is off and my weight gets passed my knee on my follow-thru.  If I move into my slide and keep the weight over the knee and middle of my foot, the pain goes away.
