Sweaty hands... it's a curse
« on: October 19, 2004, 02:38:20 PM »
I have always have had a problem with sweating.  I break into a sweat while practicing.

So naturally I have to use rosin bags and grip sacks.  My hands sweat and when that happens I start hanging up in the ball.  Most centers I go to seem to have crappy hand dryers.

So, do you use hand drying products like grip sacks, puff balls, rosin bags, etc?

Any particular luck with any particular one?

I too suffer from this problem. Nothing really seems to work. I use a combination of grip sacks and rosin, but with only moderate success.

I found easy slide works good, but a little on the expensive side.  Instead I have a little zip lock bag filled with baby powder.  I find that if you just stick your fingers and/or thumb in it and then use your rosin bag/grip sack that it does a good job with sweating.

May I recommend visiting your local Home Depot and pick up some soap stone... and maybe a small pocket knife.  Scrape the soap stone and you got yo'sef some perfect replacement for easy slide.  Soap stone is incredibly cheap.

Tony,

I have a teammate with the same problem.  His hands sweat profusely during bowling (I avoid hi-fives unless wearing a poncho...).

His best solution when time allows... using an antiperspirant in the palm area of his bowling hand.  Liquid/gels work best.  If he gets it applied about 30-45 minutes before warming up (to give it time absorb into the skin), he can get away with just a regular grip sack.  No rosin or slide needed...

Ok, i tend to have this problem too, i use a rosin bag also, but, i also have a sweat towel, that i use to keep my hand dry, and use it to wipe sweat from my forehead, and arm too.   but i am always wiping my hand on my pants and blowing on my hand and using the hand dryer too.

I, too, sweat enough for about 20 people!  I also have the habit of running my hands through my hair.  I tried rosin or grip bag at first to only find out the combination of sweat/rosin/hair product makes a sort of glue that causes the ball to absolutely STICK to the thumb!!  Since then, I've switched to a urethane slug and use green Turbo OR green Vise tape on my thumb -- this makes for an ultra smooth release, even if part of my skin is a little tacky.  I also try to wear a hat or visor to keep me from running my hands through my hair and have basically a bath towel to towel off with occassionally....

I don’t have this problem but I know a few that do.

Some have gone to holding a damp towel between shots. This cools the hand. Then when it is their turn they dry their hand on the blower. This seems to give them enough time to throw their shots before the hand warms back up and they start sweating again.

I have the same problem Tony. For now, until I get a puff ball or rosin bag, I just carry a 'sweat rag' with me, that I use to wipe my face/hands/head/arm or whatever is sweating at the moment. Usually I wipe my hands off, then stick my thumb in the EZ slide bag, then put my thumb in the ball to get the EZ slide in the thumb hole, wipe my hands off again, then use the air dryer on the return. For now, it works ok, but only lasts a few shots, if that. I have also heard that you can make your own grip sacks, and just fill them with kitty litter, which will absorb sweat alot.

I too had a similar problem and it was so bad that I went to a doctor for it.  He said that I had hyperhidrosis and gave me a prescription for it (Drysol it think).  My sweating was so bad that I would ruin light colored clothing after only wearing them 3-4 times.  Now I don't hardly sweat at all in the places where I apply this strong Antiperspirant.  The only draw back is that there is some irritation with it when I use it under my arms but I haven't had any problems with it when I apply it to my hands.  It's well or it though.

I find that when I use the little grip sacks that sometimes it dries my hand out too much and I get a sticky release.  What I normally do for those "heavy nights"  is get a clean bowling towel and keep it bunched up in my hand. I might even wrap it around and squeeze on it for some tension release.

As for baby powder, do not put it on your hand or fingers, this will cause the ball to slip.  All you really need to do is put a little on the back of your thumb only.  This will cause the ball to slide off nicely, without it feeling like it will fall.  I keep some in a zip lock bag, and shake it up.  Then open the bag, and slide the lightly coated plastic over the back of the thumb, and use a finger on the left hand to lightly spread it around or wipe of excess.  Then put the ball on my hand.

I have the same problem. I NEVER use ROSIN....EVER!!!!!  I would hang up too much. I have found the relief for sweating. I searched and searched for a long time and finally found it. It's called O-Mi-So-Dri.... I have only found this product at my local pro shop. I have looked in other pro shops while traveling and haven't seen it. I know you can order it from them directly. It looks like a rosin bag but personally I never hang up using this stuff. Hope this helps.
