My first reply (#3) was made assuming you had a free pendulum arm swing, no muscle. They only way in my mind that it could go behind your body was if it had started out slightly to the right of your body.
If you don't have a muscle-free pendulum arm swing and are adding to it, then perhaps as the ball is clearing your hip, you are opening up or turning your shoulders?
