I'll start this by saying, I have no issues on a house shot. I bowl one league a week and average in the high 220s. Although if i got my armswing issues lined out it could sneak into the low 230s im sure. high average in the house is 233 or so. So i'm not far off of that.
I'm 6'0" and have a very long wingspan. My arms are just freakishly long. My armswing goes behind me and loops back around. I come out of the ball correctly at the bottom, its just getting there that I don't like. I dont really think about it much until i see it in a video and it makes me want to puke. I'm just unable to go straight back with the ball. It could be from my push away, or the fit and the pitches not being correct. I'm just really unsure where to go from here.

If you can be consistent and repeat, why change?
You said you have no issues on a house shot, so what are your issues?
-
One, i hate how it looks. 2 I bowl on a lot of non-house shot tournaments.

If you were to look at a video or photo of you starting your approach from behind, where is the ball? If you are holding it slightly to the right (where you can see the ball from behind), that could lead to swinging the ball behind you. But, you are best seeking an instructor to find and correct your armswing problem.

My son does the exact same thing. If you figure out how to correct it, let me know. I (and his coach) have had many theories and many mitigation strategies; to no avail so far. On house he is generally fine. But on challenge and sport patterns it becomes a big issue. The release window is so small that these patterns punish even the slights release timing flaws.

I think ive figured out the reasoning. Just haven't worked on it yet to see. Ill keep you updated

My first reply (#3) was made assuming you had a free pendulum arm swing, no muscle. They only way in my mind that it could go behind your body was if it had started out slightly to the right of your body.
If you don't have a muscle-free pendulum arm swing and are adding to it, then perhaps as the ball is clearing your hip, you are opening up or turning your shoulders?
Again, see an instructor to watch you in person.

My son in a nutshell. But he'll swear he's letting it swing....video evidence to the contrary. Sadly, with all of his other activities, we don't have much opportunity to go to the lanes for practice time to work on fixes.

This is precisely the issue. My shoulder drops, i muscle it some, and I dont cross my right foot in front of my left on the 2nd step causing me to have to clear my hip. I think it may be a pretty simple fix if i can get the muscle memory correct.

I have been lucky enough to work with Bob Learn Jr and this issue was something that he helped me with. I am a high rev power player so I have to open my shoulders and I had issues keeping everything in sync. He had me hold a rosin bag in my left hand and I had to keep it out in front of me pointed at my target during my approach. This kept my right shoulder from dipping down, kept my arm swing slotted where it should be, and made me much more consistent. I'm now able to score higher on sport or PBA patterns since I can repeat shots.

Interesting. I will have to try that.
