Armswing Question......
« on: May 09, 2005, 12:13:30 AM »
Hi all......need some opinions here........

My brother came by our last night of our mixed league on Saturday and had his digital camera with him that takes 60 second "movies".  Well, I had him take a couple clips of me bowling (I'll post them when I get them) and when I was watching them, I noticed something and need some advice........

CAVEAT: I'll be seeing my coach soon also about this issue but just wanted to run it by everyone here....

I noticed that on some shots I have a tendency for my arm to be too far away from my body coming thru the swing (arm is away from my side as it crosses my body) ?!?!  I had never noticed that before........

Anyhow.......the thing is,...I don't "feel" it ....but sometimes I can see (NOW) why I can be inconsistent and 'pull' shots...

Is this just something that I need to concentrate on, because everything else looks ok, ...backswing, etc....it's just that sometimes my arm seems too far away when it comes thru....

thoughts ??

like I said, I'll be seeing my coach soon to have a 'refresher' , and, I'll post the clips when my brother sends them to me...I'm hoping today.....

Thanks

Hey Jeff, typically the swing going across your body is either you subconsciously pushing your arm away from you on the backswing (to keep it from going behind you) or it could also be caused by bad timing.  If your feet are too fast to the line, your body has to pull the ball through and your arm ends up off swingplane.

Another thing to think about, is your slide foot really ending up underneath your body?  If your foot is off a bit to the left and you are falling a bit to the right, your armswing would be affected.  Just speculation, its been awhile since I've seen ya bowl

What is your foot speed like, is it any faster? Are you laying the ball down earlier? Are you opening your shoulders and trying to pull it through? Alot of questions really Jeff. Not trying to be a smart a%% just like to see the video.

Anyone have change for my 2 cents?

HEY! No problem!! this is what I wanted!!

I CAN get fast with my feet, so maybe that's what I'm seeing....FAST FEET = PULL THRU! thus my arm isn't tight .....interesting...thanks !

Thanks Darrell!! VERY POSSIBLE !!  Because I do try to keep the ball from "wrapping" .....thanks guys......

I WILL post vids when they come thru.....they're going to be poor quality, but I think you'll get the idea.....

Problems that late in the swing are almost invariably caused by something earlier in the swing.  It could be as early as your pushaway.  This is where a good coach (or video) are invaluable.

I have a good coach (havne't been there in a while) and I just now noticed it on the clips my brother was taking, not on my original videos my coach had taken and I'm sure it would have been noticed then...so I'm pretty sure it's not something I do all the time...

I'm starting to think that Darrell nailed it,...concerned about wrapping behind me ...so I'm sub-consciously pushing out....more to come...

Can you be a bit more descriptive. I dont know where... "coming thru the swing" takes place? Where is your swing/arm too far away from your body? Sorry, I dont follow (no pun intended).

I've seen WRW talk about his swing, and he says he does the small loop to keep himself from "chicken-winging" his swing.  Rather than allow his swing from starting inside, and finishing outside causing an outside shot, WRW starts it a touch outside, and thus the swing finishes inside next to his ankle, where you want it.

It works for WRW, and is always worth a try.  Bowling is a game of inverse operations.  If you want to stop one thing, you need to find the cause that is producing the bad result.  Swing goes outside, something is starting inside, and vice versa.
