ARRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! My day on the PBA
« on: May 08, 2005, 03:12:00 PM »
I was in the thick of the running in my most recent PBA tournament when I managed to commit professional bowling suicide in the last game of my 8-game set.  Here's a link; I finished in 46th.

http://www.pba.com/regional/regionstory.asp?ID=1016

The pattern was 42' of really heavy stuff.  Early on, strong balls would hardly wrinkle.  I started out throwing my Ebonite Savage, but soon switched to my Columbia 300 Formula. Here's the run down of the tournament:

Game 1:
81 s72 9/ X X X X 7/ X XX6 - 221 +21

Game 2
7/ 8/ 9/ 72 s81 X 8- 8/ w62 9/X - 142 -37

Game 3
9/ X 8/ X X 9/ X X 8/ X9/ - 217 -20

Game 4
9/ 8/ s7/ 7/ X X 8/ X 9/ X71 - 198 -22

Game 5
s81 X X X X X X X w7/ s72 - 232 +10

Game 6
8/ 9/ 7/ X X X 9/ 9/ 81 9/7 - 198 +8

Game 7
X 9/ X 8/ 72 X  X 8/ 7/ 8/6 - 185 -7

Game 8
X 8/ s63 62 X 9- 9/ X X 81 - 157 -50

There were a couple of spare-shooting brain-farts in game 8.  The 4th frame was a 1-3-6-10.  The 6th was a 10 pin that I just completely flagged.  the 10th was a double wood that I tried to hook the ball at (stupid) and came up short.  Assume spares in all cases - the game now totals 191 with an assumed 9 count in the fill 11th.  Instead of -50, I'm at -16.  Any other spare shooting error notwithstanding and I'm in the money.  Hindsight really sucks in bowling.

As you can see on the link, the cut ended up at -11.  George Turner, the last guy to make the cut, bowls on my sport league.  As you can see, with 1 game to go I was within the cut, but that one game during which I was lost cost me a check.  In game 2, I forgot some valuable advice that Ron C (Magic Carpet) had given me; advice I remembered in the 10th frame of game 2 where I made it back to the pocket and was rewarded with a solid 7 and flush strike.  Thanks Ron; dopey me.  As you can see, the advice worked because in game 2 I was back over par for the game.  Had I remembered his words earlier in the game, I would have been bowling on Sunday.

In retrospect, I should have moved to the gutter in game 8.  I was playing inside around 4th arrow and tried to make it with that shot despite my miserable performance.  Lesson learned, I suppose.

At one point in time I was out-pacing both WRW Jr. and PA.  But, like the champions they are, they both managed to work their way out of a hole and, in Walter Ray's case, go on to match play (and the title).  BTW, WRW Jr.'s 300 in the finals was a sight to behold.  The only questionable shot was the 10th strike when the 10 was nudged over late by the 6 pin.  The 11th was a little weak, but covered all 10.  Every other shot was 10 in the pit.  BTW, WRW was playing at about 5 straight up the ditch with a MoRich Weapon of Mass Bias with end-over-end roll - exactly where I should have been in game 8.

I hope you enjoyed this little trip into my PBA world.  If this thread is of any interest, I'll repeat the process after my tournament in Chesapeake in a few weeks.  Later.

WRW shot somewhere just south of 1300 his last five.  Just goes to show, those guys can really step it up when it's time to go.

Bowling in regionals; especially this time of year when all the regular tour guys are bowling is a definite learning experience. The key to being successful is truly learning and not just looking back in hindsight. If you can take something away from the tournament that you can actually use next time then it was worth it. I know mom and your 12 kids would love for you to bring home a check but bringing home a lesson will pay off later. Front line experience bowling against the best in the world is something I can’t teach. There is only one way to get that lesson. To even be able to keep up for a short time must less be close as you were shows you are progressing nicely.

That is a pretty hard pattern and you did very well to not be a full time regional bowler.
Make sure you come in for a tune up now and then so we can keep you headed in the right direction. Chris Hans is leading in the points so far but he still knows to stop in for a tune up so he can stay on track.
Keep bowling great!

I don't have (and never will have) a chance to bowl or even see WRW in action.

Never say never.

WRW, PA and I all bowled the same squad.  PA was about half a house away all day, but WRW was just 2 pairs down.  For the first 6 games we skipped one pair as we moved across the house.  In game 7 we skipped 2 pair, which put me right next to Walter Ray for about half a game.  Imagine the feeling of having one of the best players in the world on the pair next to you waiting and watching as you make your approach and delivery.  Imagine while waiting turn, giving the nod to Walter Ray for him to bowl ahead.  Wow!

In addition to WRW and PA, there were other greats in the center.  During the practice session on Friday I was practicing on 9&10, the pair on which I was scheduled to start on Saturday.  I reached down to get some air and bumped the hand of another bowler.  I turned to say excuse me and found myself standing should-to-shoulder with Dave D'Entremont.  During the tournament, I got the chance to chat for a few minutes with Tim Criss and Richard Wolfe on separate occasions.  Wolfe and I talked briefly about how conditions would change from one squad to the next.  I should have watched how he threw his last game or two - it might have helped me a bit in my last game.  I bowled my squad with Ronnie Horton, who saw success this year on the National level.  What a weekend!

A thought ran through my mind a couple of times this weekend:  I have D'Entremont and WIlliams on video at home - video I shot years ago when I was in college and still watch today.  Back when I recorded the shows, I would sit in my dorm room and dream of the day when I would bowl with greats like them.  Can you imagine what it felt like to suddenly realize that those dreams from 15 years ago have become a physical reality?  I bet you can't (now), but you can someday.  People used to tell me it was a pipe dream: "You and Walter Ray in the same tournament??  Hardly!"  Here's to proving the critics wrong!

Get you some!

Pin-Nut,  good shooting.  I've had the pleasure of being on the same squad with Tim Criss in a couple regionals in the East region, and have talked to him on a number of occasions.  He is one of the nicest guys out there.

A couple of years ago, at a regional in Franklin, VA, WRW was in the group following mine, and almost every game, he was waiting for us to come off of the pair.  It's always a treat to see and watch those guys, since it becomes very obvious how much better than us (part-time regional players)they really are.  I really got a lesson in that when I crossed with Steve Jaros in Ohio a couple of years ago.  I'm struggling to shoot 190s and he's making the shot (at the time Pattern A) look like a house wall.  I've come to te conclusion, that at my age(54), I'm better off in Senior Regionals (at lease during the summer), where I at least have a shot of being competetive, than trying to compete with the exempt players.

Pin-nut,

I'm sooooo jealous. It must have felt like D-Train pitching to Barry Bonds huh?!?

The only pros (let alone bowl) that I've watched in person are Tore Togerson and Tim Mack.

Both great guys!

Great bowling but looking at the last game as the make or break game might not be the best way to look at it. I counted 8 spares spaced thoughout the 8 games that could have been made. But the biggest thing that I saw was the second game looked liked you had a good look at the pocket in the first game (221)then moved like you always will in regionals and looks like you lost the pocket and shot 147 ouch. It's important to watch the people you are crossing with to see if they are playing the lanes the same so when you move you will have an idea of where to play the lanes. As far as Walter goes he and Norm Duke are some of the best at playing a part of the lane nobody else is to enhance there reaction. Most people played deap on pattern 4 due to the heavy volume of oil outside leaving little to no room for errors, us mear mortal people must play what the lanes give us people like Walter can play anywhere anytime. Again good bowling and good luck in the future. As far as coming thru the ball or behind it and making it hook is more about follow thru and letting the ball roll of the hand not throwing it, I find as most people will tell you I think at least if you can get good reaction from coming thru the ball your carry will be better then if you come over the ball.

Thanks for the assist, Jeff.  I only looked at game 8 as the make-or-break game because of where I stood after game 7 - that is at -7.  I felt that game 8 was testing ground to see whether I was ready to bowl on Sunday - it wasn't to be this weekend.

I'll be sure to take a look at people ahead of me.  I know the lefty that I was following was playing out around 10 and not getting anything.  I at least was in contention playing 4th arrow.  You can bet that I will be practicing that end-over-end up the boards shot for the next time I come in contact with Pattern 4.  I'm also probably going to have my equipment redrilled with 1/8 forward thumb pitch to help me with softening my grip on the ball.

As for the 8 makeable spares, I'll give you a run down:
Game 1:  1st frame, chopped a 4-8
Game 2: 4th frame, chopped a 2-4-8; 7th frame, flagged a 2-4; 9th frame, chopped a washout.
Game 3: Clean
Game 4: 10th frame, chopped the head pin off the 1-3-6
Game 5: 1st frame, wiggled the 3 en route to taking out the 10 (baby split)
Game 6: 9th frame, chopped a 5-8
Game 7: 5th frame, left 1-3-10 and only carried the 1-3
Game 8: 4th frame, chopped the 1-3 off of the 1-3-6-10; 6th frame, flagged a 10 pin; 10th frame, didn't care and came up short on a double-wood 3-9

In all, I count 11 shots that any decent professional should be able to convert at least 75-90% of on any given day (your 8 plus the 3 in game 8).  As I practice, you can guess that I'll spend a bit of time throwing my Big Blue Spare at a lot of different areas of the lane so I can get the feel of where and how to do the job.

I don't see myself missing the cut by 20-40 pins for very long.  Very soon, success is going to sneak up on me and I'll be all over the South region raising bowling hell as I go.  A banner needs to hang in a center on tournament weekends:

Awesome stuff pin-nut, my heart would have probably beat right out of my chest. I want to some day bowl with the best in the world, I've got a LONG way to go...but I'm determined. Just out of curiosity...what was the advice that Ron gave you that you didn't remember?
