and why?  Granted, many of us have used pins of different lengths hence the 2 questions.

2-3" pins because they are the "optimal" length for drilling options.

what limitations exist with 1" or 4"+ inch pins where drilling is concerned? (aside from the weight imbalance)

Obviously you couldn't do a 5x3 drilling with a 1" pin.  You might be able to get a similar effect by pretending the pin is as long as you need, just drawing a line through the pin from the CG.  This sounds to me like an angle-based drilling system.

A friend has a Phenom with a 6" pin (the CG is just a hair above the MB).  He usually has his stuff drilled with the MB swung out towards the VAL but with this particular ball, he couldn't do that without a ginormous weight hole.  He couldn't drill it with the MB to the right of the thumb because of too much thumb weight (I think).

I 90% of the time order 2-3 pins in ths shop. When I KNOW I am going to drill a ball a certain way, then i will request something else if necessary, such as pin out, above the finegr line and the cg in the palm. Could need a 3-4 pin for that, etc

I also like 3 - 4" pins.  Most of my customers want the ball to go long and snap.  It's easy to put the pin over the fingers with a label layout for those that don't want a balance hole.  --  JohnP

Most everything I get for orders is 2-3 or 3-4, almost 50/50 ...so I guess it's up to the individual. If I'm ordering just to order, it'll be 3-4

Bingo!

I order 2-3" pins for when I plan to put the pin at or under the bridge area.

I order 3-4" pins when I plan to put the pin over the bridge area.

I never order a 1-2" pin or a 4-5" pin.
