« on: December 29, 2008, 10:50:13 AM »
Hi all, I'm considering purchasing a new bowling ball, but I need to know if it's worth it. Tell me if I have any gaps with my current arsenal, it's greatly appreciated.

Brunswick Strike Zone
Brunswick Vapor Zone
Hammer Doom Raw Hammer
Hammer Anger Raw Hammer
Hammer Purple Vibe
Track Solution
Spare Ball

Thanks all!

It depends, which three are you planning to get rid of?  --  JohnP

Well its not like I'm new to the game. I competed in high school with a 226 average, have been bowling for 14 years, and am a member of the Michigan Junior Masters Association, I was just wondering if you all thought there was a gap in the arsenal.

Depending on drilling you may want to add one more ball.  but if they are drilled with a wide vareity you should have all the bases covered.

The reason to buy into this multiple ball garbage is because you can encounter different lane conditions at tournaments that may require a different ball. Especially when you're bowling 8+ games, it's nice to have the luxury to switch if the need arises. Alright, well I'm going to assume it's fine.

IMO unless you're PBA or "professional amateur", three balls + a spare ball is enough for any tournament.  A strong ball for oil, a medium ball, and a weak ball for dry.  Learn how those balls differ, their strengths and weaknesses, then learn how to adjust lines and your release to cover various conditions.  --  JohnP

You can bowl with just two balls and a spare ball and do fairly well.  However, that really limits your options and forces you into a corner if they're too dry for your only solid and too over/under for your only pearl, and your carry sucks playing the line it forces.  I tried for years to only carry two balls, and I finally realized that it was really limiting my options when I saw different lane conditions than the norm.  My accuracy, consistency, and often carry suffer if I make more than small to medium changes in my release.  It's not for lack of practice and coaching, I'm just plain not good at it no matter what I do.  I have my A and B game releases down pat, but my C and D game releases are just horrific.

If you bowl in more than one house, you really should give yourself options as you will see a variety of lane conditions and oil patterns.  Two solids and a pearl, or one solid and two pearls (or two of each if you aren't good at changing your release drastically, like me) should give you the chance to play different parts of the lane with different angles and still carry well.

Most people on this site use too many bowling balls.  There are the opposites like cool rockin daddy who feel you should be able to make any ball work on any condition if you're talented enough (physics dictates that this is just not true).  The best solution is almost always in the middle.

You probably could use a heavy oil ball thats it. Maybe a particle Ogre if you like Visionary.

I've seen so many folks with 6 or 8 strike balls hurt their game because they continually wonder if they're using the "right" ball.  Maybe they should be using the ball that breaks one board more or less, or a little earlier or later.  They switch back and forth and never get comfortable.  KISS.  --  JohnP

If your intent is to add a ball to your arsenal, I would agree with Drrev2000, and purchase the Maxx Zone (you're already comfortable with Brunswick's stuff), as it is a more hooking ball (meaning it starts to grab earlier) than all other balls you already have.

This would be a good addition just in case any of the equipment in your bag slides past your breakpoint and doesn't find friction area to the pocket.

As for the admonishments rendered above by some regarding the use of too many balls and the confusion it can create as a result of so doing in trying to find or get comfortable with a line, you are obviously an accomplished bowler and don't need to be told how to best proceed in such situations.

Good luck and good bowling.
