Do you guys like finger inserts or no?
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:54:53 PM »
been a looong time, ( 12 + yrs or so ) since Ive used them.. Ive decided im going to buy a cheaper demo/test ball in case I dont like the weight or tips it wont be as much of a sting on the wallet Dropping to 14 pounds ( rotator cuff issues ) and throwing in a set of tips , since Ive gone without them for years, and forgot what they're like..

So my question is to those who have had balls with and without inserts , what do you like better and why.  It would seem that you could get more revs with tips, I have no idea why just a guess.

You get more lift and a more consistient feel imo with grips in the ball. I think this is why 90% of bowlers use them.

back  when  the  brunswick golith  came  out  I  bought and  drilled  it  for  no  finger grips....

not  sure  if  it  was  the  ball  or  the  no  grips  but  I  hated the  ball  and  feel.

gave  the  ball  away  and  never  tried  the  no  grips  for  fingers  again

If the fit is correct you should not have any loss or gain from grips, I personally don't like paying for and replacing grips and have had no issues with properly drilled finger holes and don't think i'll ever use inserts.

Its just a feel thing.

i never had a ball without grips for the last 15 years. then this year i went down to 14lb. gear and no grips. that was the best thing i ever did. no grips IMO gives a smoother and more controlable release at least for me anyways.

I think its a personal thing.  I used to use no grips when I bowled more often.  Now that I only bowl once a week, I changed over to grips about 2 years ago.  I hated them at first, but now I kinda like em.

I've always used them, but lots of pros don't.
My fingers change size over any given night so I'm not sure how I'd get on without them.
You've got to change them as soon as feel changes, they do get worn out of course.  It's something to consider when you switch from your strike ball to your spare ball.  The ball most used will always be more worn than the spare ball, giving you slightly different feel if you don't keep them grips fairly new.

I like no grips better for consistency and because my fingers/hand swells.

I have just went back to grips though as I was getting pain in my joints of my bowling fingers and because I was having trouble with layouts due to using switch grips making the ball have a lot of finger weight (stupid static weights!... why are we still following this rule???)

Used grips back in the 90's. Around 2000 was influenced not to use grips. After getting constant calluses and pain in my fingers I went back to grips in some of my balls and it has been a big improvement in my game.

There are pros and cons to both.
