Arsenal question
« on: March 08, 2016, 11:18:10 AM »
I know this question has been asked many times, but ball selections and oils change over time so I'll ask again! Looking to start fresh with a new 5 ball arsenal. 1 plastic which I have, and looking for 1 heavy oil and 1 light oil and 2 mediums probably a pearl and solid? Looking for best recommendations for house shots. Taking into account everything, what do you find to be the best 4 balls out there that would allow me to handle pretty much anything. Bowl several houses - all a little different. I'm a stroker that does best when playing that second arrow swing shot. Avg in 220's. Willing to try any company. My newest ball is a Marvel Pearl so it's been awhile and I'm not up on the new selections.

Heavy oil: Lock, Alpha Crux, Guru Master, Guru Supreme, Nirvana, Scandal

Medium oil: Danger Zone, Fight, Hectic, Devour, Melee Jab, Diva XOXO, Heat, Viral, Vandal, HyRoad, HyWire, Black Ops, Dark Matter

Light oil: Ride, JoyRide, Loco, Brute, Strike King, Deep Freeze, Hooligan, Outcast

There are so many choices, and to me there is not one company that stands above the rest right now

Everybody has good stuff on the market these days so that's a really tough question to answer. I'll do a few from some companies I feel comfortable knowing enough about:

Motiv: Jackal Carnage - Forza Redline - Venom Shock - Graffiti Tag
Storm: Alpha Crux - Phaze - Fight - Joy Ride
Roto Grip: Eternal Cell (sanded) - Hy-Wire - Devour - Loco (pearl or solid)
Radical: Guru Supreme - Ridiculous Asym - Primo Solid - Rack Attack (pearl or solid)
Brunswick: Nirvana - Mastermind Brainiac - Danger Zone - Strike King
Ebonite - Warrior Elite - Game Breaker 2 Gold - Game Breaker 2 - Cyclone

Maybe a better question is do I look for certain characteristics when setting up this arsenal? Pearls vs solids, High RG vs Low RG. What characteristics best fit each lane condition? Or is RG not what I should be looking at?

Solid - Low RG for Oil
Solid - Med RG for Med
Pearl - Med RG for Med
Pearl - High RG for Dry

Or am I way off? Since I don't buy very often, looking to get the best bang for my buck and 4 pieces that are not real similar. I feel like all my stuff is similar right now except for dulling or polishing a cover to get a different look. Doesn't help on league nights though.

Don't over think it if you're not bowling a lot of tournaments with sport conditions.

Stronger cover for heavier oil

Ball with smoother reaction and ball with more angular reaction for medium oil

Weaker ball for light oil

I use a Storm Fight a lot right now, it's very versatile for me. If I need less ball, I go to my Storm Ride. If I need more, I have a Motiv Revolt Havoc

I'm a stroker too, aim for the second mark too.
I wouldn't buy the Fight. Tore Torgersen (the PSO I go to) has heard bad rumors about the ball, from his pba friends. Like that pba bowler from Finland.
I'm sure tose guys know what they're talking about.

If I had to make an arsenal out of anything other than heavy oil balls (I don't bowl in tournaments, just league bowling, and very rarely the oil machine breaks).

Motiv: Jackal or Jackal Carnage (I'm happy with the Jackal on fresh heavy oil and medium) - Froza(medium) - Venom Panic - Ascent Pearl (red/black because it looks coolest out of the Ascents, they're all the same except the color)
Columbia 300: Swerve (tried it out on burned oil, hooked a lot)(it'll hook a lot on fresh heavy oil too with my style) - Delirium shock or Severe Delirium (medium) - Scout/R - Tiger's Eye (light)
Hammer: Scandal (hooks a lot, more than what the Swerve did) - Dark Legend - Arson High Flare Solid or Viral Solid (light)
Roto Grip: Menace - Devour - Loco Pearl
900 Global: Dream Big(heavy) - Dark Matter(medium) - Boh-Yah(light)

And for those that I'm not sure about, just know which heavy oil ball I'd buy from them if I could buy any ball I wanted and had space for many balls :P
Storm: Alpha Crux. Oh and Hy-road for medium oil, burn. And Ride for light oil.
Ebonite: Warrior Elite - Game Breaker 2(because others say it's good for medium-light oil). Cyclone for light or desert. I've seen the Cyclone on medium oil, it hooked a bit, so I'm guessing it would be a good choice for when there's barelly any oil out there.
Radical: Guru Master
Track: Paradox
Brunswick: Ultimate Nirvana
DV8: Grudge

Though if the PSO you go to is good, he should be able to put together a good arsenal for you.
Just mention that you want one for heavy oil, one for medium, one for light and maybe one for when there's no oil out there.

Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)

As another stroker, I think the best ball out there on house shots is the Paradox.  Also good on longer tournament patterns.  I also have the Lock, but like the motion of the Paradox better.  Other balls I would look at are Viral, either pearl or solid for playing more direct outside the oil line on broken down shots.  I like the Virals better than the Ride on drier patterns.  Not sure you really need much more than a couple of balls on house shots.  Keep your old Marvel Pearl for a different look on medium conditions.

No Jackal Carnage, Forza, Venom Shock, Primal rage? No Motiv at all? LOL

Gonna reply again.
Now that I've tried the new balls.

The best thing you got in your arsenal is your brain, hopefully.
Most balls could be great for any style, you just need to adapt a bit to how they hook.
Like for myself for example, the way I bowl atm won't get the most out of the Scandal and the Swerve. So next week when I bowl I'm gonna try lowering my swing, that way I'll get less speed. I noticed that the balls wouldn't hook soon enough at the speed I got on them on Wednesday's practice. Lowering my speed should give them more time to hook. BUT I also need to move slightly more to the left with at least the Scandal. I didn't bowl much with the Swerve, but lowering my speed with it should be enough, no moving.
Should learn how to crank a bit, to get more hook.
You might want to get a layout that'll give you delayed hook. Don't get late hook, and not early hook(well unless you throw the balls at a very high speed :P).

I'll make another list, now that I've tried the Scandal and Swerve.

Motiv: Jackal or Carnage, both will do strokers good. I'd go with Ascent for light to none oil.
Hammer: Scandal. Hooks a lot.  Blue Hammer or Viral for light oil.
C300: Swerve for heavy. Though Columbia 300 told me that the Raw Urge is great on heavy oil too.
Scout/R - Tiger's Eye for light oil. Or the black one if you don't want the flame design.
Roto Grip: Menace for heavy, Loco Pearl for light.
900 Global: Dream Big for heavy, Dark Matter for light.
Ebonite: Warrior Elite for heavy, Cyclone for light.
Track: Paradox for heavy.

I want to add my 2 cents worth here.  I used to use several different companies, purchased depending on hype, color and budget.  Being with Storm for a while, I suggest you find one company who's balls work best with your style.  Using balls from one company will give you the ability to use a range of comparable balls that are manufactured for the condition you are looking for.  For example, One companies medium ball may be as strong as another companies weak or strong ball, so you may not get the range of balls you are looking for.

I might follow your advice and stick with Motiv.
The Jackal has been most pleasing to me. Though I'm hoping the new balls will please me too.
I'm thinking of getting the Carnage before the new season starts after the summer break. I'll probably do that, UNLESS Motiv comes out with a new heavy oil ball that seems better :P

Why limit yourself to one company?  Yes, one company's medium oil ball may hook more than another company's med-oil ball, but that just gives you options.  Every company is susceptible to turning out a dud every now and then.  Just sayin.
