Arsenal Reconfiguration
« on: February 02, 2014, 08:56:01 AM »
Yesterday I bowled day two the Illinois Boys Bowling State Tournament. I am starting to notice my Hy-Road is getting weaker. It has been a great benchmark for me all season. It was skidding more in oil 2 weeks ago. I soaked it to remove the oil in it and it helped me at my sectionals. Unfortunately, now my Frantic is earlier and has more backend than my Hy-Road. So instead of looking for weaker pieces to add, I want two stronger pieces. Right now I am thinking of the following: Marvel Pearl, Byte, IQ Tour Fusion, IQ Tour Solid, Asylum, Defiant Soul, Rumble. I want a ball with a strong cover (but no particles), strong core (but not a very early core). Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Asylum would be comparable to your Hy-Road.   If you want something stronger I would look at the Byte or or Defiant Soul.

The Asylum is stronger than the Hyroad, I've had both...but, the Asylum does rev pretty early although it doesn't lose anything on the back. Its a smoother but harder move than the Hyroad. The Soul is also about 3-4 stronger than asylum. The Soul and asylum are excellent balls!

How does the Asylum compare to the IQ tour fusion,  in terms of overall strength?  Gonna pick 1 of these two up this weekend.....

I would think whoever has been drilling your equipment and knows your game, would be a good source to go to. Have you had this discussion with your coach?
Good luck.

I need a new driller (a lot of personal reasons) and my coaches know a lot less than I do about bowling.

What part if IL are you in? I only know the northwest suburbs.  There's a shop though inside Brunswick Zone in Woodridge that is suppose to be decent. I believe impending doom goes to them.  I don't use them as they are too far away from where I'm at.  Plus you're better off getting the equipment through them.  Unfortunately they charge an arm and a leg if you bring a ball in. But that's like most places nowadays.

I live in a Chicago land suburb. I am probably going to go bavk to the guys at Olympia Lanes (Hammond, IN). Can anyone describe the motion of all the bowling balls I've listed.

Who owns the shop now? I remember a long time ago the shop that was there like in the 90's the owner back then would bash his customers once they walked out the door.

The old guy Paul that was there for years retired about a year and a half ago...I wouldnt let him drill or touch anything of mine...Rich Augustine is one of the owners, they do great work. My pro shop guy closed down and moved his shop to his house which is too far from me, I bowl in a league that Rich is in so i figured I would give them a try. They have drilled 4 balls for me now and been great! No problems and their prices are literally $15-20 per ball less than anywhere else in the area for High Performance balls. Id highly recommend them. Their prices to bring a ball in are reasonable, but his ball prices are so good, I have bought 4 soon to be 5 balls from the shop.

Was the shop you went to out of streamwood?  I think he drills out of his house in Dekalb. That was a long time ago though. He was a decent bowler too. Unfortunately injuries for me have sidelined me for the remainder of the season and I may have to give it up altogether or start to learn to bowl left handed.

Thanks.  Wasn't it a location of Star Pro shop in there?   There was some kid (to me anyways, lol) named Jeff used to be one of the drillers out of there.   Maybe not but worked out of the shop.  I bowled in the Wednesday Night Businessmen at BZ GH before they left.  To the op, didn't mean to hijack your thread.
