Arsenal Set-up Question
« on: April 14, 2004, 04:41:19 PM »
No, ... not "what is your arsenal" ...but more important....how do you set it up ?  Or, another way to ask it is....what's your philosophy on setting it up?

Torgy says 3 lengths, 2 shapes = 6 balls (tourney arsenal)....I like that, but is it really that simple ?

Some just like to go across, or up a line chart for length and backend....less length, less backend, and so-on....

What do YOU do ?  How do YOU approach it ?

I would tend to think that you'd want your emphsasis on balls or reactions that you USUALLY encounter, ...say, mediums for example,...so have 3 balls for mediums w/ different shapes, angular, smooth, and maybe a hook-set ....

ON EDIT: Don't list a bunch of balls as an arsenal,...that's not the question

Thoughts ? Any and all..........thx

SS,

not balls and /or ball manufacturers....just how you think about setting it up,...conditions, and/or situations...

Jeff,
I do not think it is really as easy as Torgy makes it sound. Most of the conditions that I bowl on when I go to tournaments do not allow for that. Majority of the time it is heavy oil, no backends. On top of that there is no real define "track" area because of this.

WITH THAT SAID: I try to cover myself for everything.

I currently do not have equipment to fill all of these, but I will very soon.

5inch pin cg in palm, pin above fingers
5inch pin cg in palm pin below fingers

4inch pin cg swung out about 1.5 inches pin above fingers
4inch pin cg swung out about 1.5 inches pin below fingers

leverage drilling (stacked), pin slightly above finger line
leverage drilling (stacked), pin slightly below finger line

I am currently thinking of even longer pins....6in from PAP. But each of these drillings will give me a different look on the lane, different reaction off of the breakpoint. This is a generic version. My tournament arsenal usually consists of 8 balls.

That's a great response Plus40 thanks!  In your quote below....would your benchmark be the 3rd down, early arc....could you put the balls next to the list you have below for me to do an additional comparison,...take it a step further so-to-speak?  Thanks..

I basically agree with Torgy, and it is simple yet not so simple. My equipment is set up like this from strongest to weakest.

Early arc
Skid Flip
Early arc
Skid Flip
Late arc
Spare ball

I'm more of the 4 an 2 variety but 6 balls.

Hvy - High load Particle, arcing
Med-Hvy - Particle pearl, Skidsnap
Med-Hvy - Particle,  arcing
Med - Resin pearl, arcing control
Med-light - Urethane pearl, Skidsnap
Light - Urethane Pearl, arcing

But this can change

I have found once again oil length and volume will dictate what is needed or required. For me it is the longer the oil the more snap/flip i look for the shorter the pattern the more arc i look for. The volume of oil will determine the amount of surface i use. i bowled a touny this past weekend and strugled with the corners becuase i didnt have the right shape to the pocket. It was a fairly long flat pattern with no bumper any were except for on the back or end of oil. I need something to flip or cover boards in a hurry and had nothing like that with me. I had used a crunch time the day before and did well with it because it had a stacked layout. I some how managed to get my ball bags mixed up "5 am on three hours sleep" and carried the wrong ones to the tourny. Lesson learned. Every thing in the darn bags were cg out arc layouts.
