Jeff,
At any given time I can have as many as 20 balls, and as few as 4 or 5. When the number gets up to 20, I know it is definately time to clean out. In no way do I use all them. Primarily I use 4-5 (and that is not even on a regular basis), different surfaces, different layouts.
I do not enter very many tournaments throughout the season, because running the center and a pro shop really presses my time. During the summer I hope to hit from 10-12 tournaments. Even if I bowl that many, I will carry 6-8 (8 being the very most), but probably only use 2-3 of them. FOR ME, having that many with me is a just incase kind of thing. There is nothing more bothersome than going to a tournament getting good reaction, but just not carrying. Usually for me a ball change, playing virtually the same line can be the carry difference I need.
NOW....if I had to face a tournament with 2, I think I would be fine. I am pretty good at hand position changes. SO I can usually make a strong ball weak, just with a weak release. That is not going to happen for me with a weak ball for oil though.
I do not NEED to have that many, but it is good to have options--------as long as those options do not confuse you along the way.
