Title: Arsenal Size-Reality Question!
Post by: Jeffrevs on May 18, 2004, 05:21:22 AM
NOT INCLUDING a spare ball (plastic)....

Question 1: How many people have more than 4 balls?

Question 2: How many tournaments do you enter ?

Why do I ask?  If you only enter 1,2 and on the outside chance, maybe 3 tourneys a year and have more than 4 balls.....why?  Aside from habit, do you really NEED that many ??

If it's "just to have" , or "just for fun", fine, but do you need them?

Jeff,

At any given time I can have as many as 20 balls, and as few as 4 or 5. When the number gets up to 20, I know it is definately time to clean out. In no way do I use all them. Primarily I use 4-5 (and that is not even on a regular basis), different surfaces, different layouts.

I do not enter very many tournaments throughout the season, because running the center and a pro shop really presses my time. During the summer I hope to hit from 10-12 tournaments. Even if I bowl that many, I will carry 6-8 (8 being the very most), but probably only use 2-3 of them. FOR ME, having that many with me is a just incase kind of thing. There is nothing more bothersome than going to a tournament getting good reaction, but just not carrying. Usually for me a ball change, playing virtually the same line can be the carry difference I need.

NOW....if I had to face a tournament with 2, I think I would be fine. I am pretty good at hand position changes. SO I can usually make a strong ball weak, just with a weak release. That is not going to happen for me with a weak ball for oil though.

I do not NEED to have that many, but it is good to have options--------as long as those options do not confuse you along the way.

I have 10 balls.  Bowl about 20-25 tournaments a year.  Is that fine Jeff?!?!

On your Typical house shot all you need is three, well thats what I take to leagues on a THS.  Something aggressive to open up the lane, something a step down, and a plastic for spares.  Since I only use tote bags instead of roller I'll throw another ball in to balance the weight from time to time so I'll have 4, but I can't even remember the last time I used or even had to use more than 2 balls in a league setting.

I was bowling at least one tournament a month, but I'm having trouble hitting the head pin on a regular basis, so I'm just sticking to league for now.   According to my profile, I have 13 balls.  Some are speciality balls just for tournaments.  High load particle and pearl urethane just in case.  A few are balls are ones that didn't work out for my style and I haven't got around to selling yet.  Two main balls + the Blue Dot go everywhere.  The 4th gets changed out depending on what house I'm going to.  I'll usually take 6 into a tournament, but may have one or two more in the trunk.  Stuff I don't expect to need, but hate to be caught without.

I have more stuff than I need, but like to try new stuff.  I'm not buying anything until I get my game back in order.  I tried Ron's timing tips, but they haven't helped me so far.  Fortunately, I'll see him soon.  If you don't bowl a lot of tournaments, a traveling league, or pot bowl for real money, I doubt you ever need more than 2-3 balls + a spare ball.

City and state tournament, Lilac City Tournament, Hoinke Classic, ABC Tournament, Detroit and Michigan 600 Club, Michigan 500 Club, Hamtramck Singles Classic... and probably a couple I'm forgetting.

I probably don't need that many.  I'm trying to pare my round children down to 8, but it's so hard to do!!  I like the different colors (White Dots, anyone?? lol) and I like different reactions and different brands.  It's $hopping, so it's a chick thing.  There, I said it

I have 7, I use 3 at a time. I'm selling everything except my x-factor, and buying a big blue pearl with the ca$h from them.

I have 3 I only use 1. I use it for strikes and spares. When the lane is flooded ill use my 2nd ball for strikes and spares, I wasted 25 bucks on a spare ball

Currently I own 4 balls, will have a fifth soon. To answer the second question, I bowl 10-12 tournaments a year, with the possibility of more next year as I'm getting my game back up to where I felt it was during college. For typical leagues I only bring 3 balls and I rotate depending upon the shot that I'm bowling on (as I bowl in 2 centers that put out different amounts of oil and different shots altogether). When I'm bowling a tournament, especially in a house that I only see once a year, I bring everything with me. You never know when you will use that ball that never gets used and matches up well for this particular tournament. I had a friend that I went up to VT with for a weekend tournament and he brought 7 balls. The one he averaged 225 with all weekend was his 7th ball, an old Track Hex that he said he hasn't used in 2 years.

Well the profile list 7.  That doesn't count my spare ball which I don't exactly have right now.  I picked up a new, it will be here friday.

I have a Time Zone I picked up used that has yet to be drilled.  I have a NIB Ravage I will drill next month.  I also picked up an 8 ball but I don't know what I am going to do with it.

The super carbide, sonic x, urethane are mainly tournament balls.  I usually hit 5+ a year.  I used the following this year:

Tuesday:
Inferno or werewolf
Shock Zone
Ignitor (gone)

Friday:
Bruiser (gone)
Inferno
HPD-beginning of the year
Shock Zone
Ignitor
Messenger-end of the year
but the shot never changed, what?

I have two balls with just one set of holes in them (NIB), and I have 4 that have at least one set of plugs.

I bowl in zero tournaments.  I am fairly new to the game with some disposable income and friends that go through a lot of equipment.  I just like trying out different coverstocks and manufacturers.  At some point, I'll settle on a core group and quit messing with so many, but when most of my used ones are either really cheap or free, what is the harm in carrying a few extras around to see what is out there?  No harm at all!

WOW! Nice responses! Thanks.........

A lot of tourney's going on here I see! Hmmm....that makes sense then....

DP, yeah, you're good

I've just been thinking ....I like downsizing...I dont' do a lot of tourneys, so why am I always looking to put together a tourney arsenal? Nice to have?? SURE!,  but this 'want'-'need' thing keeps coming into play.

Anyhow...keep 'em coming...

Summer is practice time, and will be 'arsenal fine-tuning' time too..revamp and see what is the most 'functional' ....

I currently have about 15 balls.  Most of them never see the light of day, but I enjoy experimenting when I have the time and/or money.

On my league shot, I typically use 2 balls.  A weak pearl reactive and plastic.  Nothing else is necessary.  By the way, the plastic is not just for spares, it often becomes the strike ball by the third game.

When I travel to tourneys, usually only a couple times a year, I take 6.  Arsenal looks something like this:
Dull particle drilled to arc
polished particle drilled to flip
solid reactive drilled to arc
pearl reactive drilled to flip
urethane just in case
plastic

I could certainly get by with less, but as I said, experimenting with balls and layouts is half the fun.

I have 3 balls. I use only two of them most of the time, and so far, I've entered only 2 tournaments this year. One ball is for heavy to med oil, and the other is for med to dry.

Jeff...

If you go by my profile I have 9 total...8 without my spare ball, but the Ultra Hot is on it's way out probably.  Beyond bowling local leagues and in-house tournaments I bowl in NEBA.  NEBA is a traveling scratch tournament that goes around the New England area and has atleast one stop a month.  I try to bowl as many of these a year that I can as well as one tournament a year with some of my friends (Liliac, Green Mountain Open or Nationals have been the last few).  I basically have three core balls in my aresenal that I use all the time:  X-Factor, V2 and Lightning Flash.  The Turbo Diesel is a new ball that I'm trying out after a Hammer Demo Day my shop had.  The Power Groove is an experiment to help with a condition that occurs in match play at some NEBAs.  The Tour Power or a ball like it is a must have for a tournament bowler...I can't even tell you how many times this was the only ball that kept me out of trouble or off the nose on a hard breaking shot.  The XXX is again an experiment and a ball that I only need maybe 3 tournaments out of the year.

For the most past I could only travel with 4 balls including the spare ball and cover maybe 70% of the conditions that I see.  But when you travel say 2 hours+ to a tournament it's nice to know that there is something else to go to if you need it.

That and working in a Pro-Shop I'm always trying a new ball here or there to see if there is a better reaction out there.  Been looking at the Flash Point recently so I might punch up one of these?  Heck, the V2 Sweet sounds interesting enough to want to try.  I guess the number of bowling balls I have is part tournament driven and part pro-shop driven.

Keep eight in the car and bring in six depending upon the house or tourney.  Had been reading these posts and was seriously considering making myself bring in four, but then last night had to pull out the yellow dot which would've been left behind.

Does anyone bring in three or four balls of the same model and just use different drillings or surface?

I have seen this done at some tournaments with different degrees of results.  Sometimes it's X-Factors or something else, but typically I find people doing this with V2's more than anything.

So, it seems to me that "most" of you have more than 4 balls, and "most" of you join more than 2 tourneys a year.....

Ok then.....THAT makes sense to me.  I want to join more tourneys....so I guess a little 6-8 baller isn't bad

Just have some that are "tourney" balls....for example, exteme conditions....

anyhow....if anyone has more to share, please do.....
