Arsenal Suggestion?
« on: May 28, 2008, 03:34:06 AM »
Ive just gotten back into bowling after a 5 year break and want to rebuild my arsenal.

So far I have the following:
-Standard plastic (old but nothing a good polish wouldnt fix)
-Brunswick Power Groove Dry (bought two weeks ago for dry lanes ((duh...)))
-AMF Nighthawk Revenge (must be at least nine years old with thousands of games on)
-Storm Trauma (200+ games on it)

Im really looking to perhaps replace the Revenge with something to round it all off and need some suggestions. Anything would be greatly appreaciated.

I can provide the ball drillings and more info, but I couldnt tell you what they mean (I never learnt about drillings before I stopped), my pro shop guy just drilled them all up when I told him I wanted something aggressive.

As well as ball advice, if anyone could point me in the direction of some knowledge about drilling, reading lanes etc. I want to be a little more professional when selecting balls to fit the condition than my old method of 'hey this one hooks just enough to stay on the lane, lets use this one cos it looks impressive'.

Thanks again,

Woody

I haven't thrown it yet but the Roto Grip Cell seems to be getting good comments about being a very versatile ball. I've ordered one but haven't gotten it yet. First place to start about knowledge is the BR FAQ at the start of this forum. Lots of good info.

Yeah I was on the same understanding about the Cell after reading lots of different reviews.
I asked my pro shop guy about the Cell, but he instead recommended the Gravity Shift. Looking at the reviews it looks like a great ball too, but its a pearl reactive, the same as my Trauma, which confused me, since I would assume getting a solid would be a better compliment, or am I wrong about this?

I should probably mention that I also have a Storm Barbed Wire too for medium conditions, I forgot about it very cleverly.

I used to have a revenge... Awesome ball!! looking at replacement, you'd want something else particley if you're going like for like.

I reckon something like a Shift, or a Sidewinder. I have a Sidewinder and it gives a really nice reaction.

If you want a site where you can learn more about bowling in general, then http://www.bowlingknowledge.info is good and has some layout type stuff on there.

If you come back after a 5 year break, I'd suggest that you first "stick to" a simple symmetrical core ball. Your game might have changed or not be that stabel in the beginning, and strong mass bias balls need a stable game to exploit their potential for the player (as well as a ball driller who knows how to set it up for you then). The Cell, while an excellent ball from what I have seen, is such ball.

In your arsenal I'd see a big gap "above" the Trauma. While it was in its time (5 years back) a strong piece that had been advertised for medium to oily shots, it is IMHO (I have one, too) a medium condition ball by today's standards. If it still O.K., I'd make an oil extraction, refersh the surface, and use it for mediums, it is IMO a very good ball.
You might just need something stronger, e. g. a low RG solid ball with a matte surface. There are some very priceworthy pieces out there, e. g. the T-Road Solid from Storm, the Gamebreaker from Ebonite or the soon-to-come Copperhead from Brunswick. I'd put a stronger, rolly drilling on it, e .g. a 4x3 setup, that will make it suitable for longer, oily shots and yield an arcing reaction, also as a compliment to the Trauma (which is rather flippy).

If you get back into the game, I'd check for a asymmetrical piece at a later point, and it might then replace the Trauma and fill the medium oil range in your arsenal.

Thanks Fugu, that was the sort of response I was after, a selection with an explanation, Ill definately do some serious thinking abouta low RG ball, I ave always had good luck with Storm eq. so the T-Road might be a good pick for me.

And thanks for the link angle, checking it out now.
