Has anyone bowled with a pulled hamstring?
« on: June 20, 2006, 11:41:17 PM »
Hey everyone,

Two days ago, I pulled my right hamstring while playing softball. It's still quite sore, but it has loosened up quite a bit from yesterday to today. Because I'm stupid, I know I'm at least going to try bowling my summer league tonight. I expect some discomfort on my fourth step (5-step approach) as that is where I really drive toward the line. Can anyone who has tried bowling with a pulled hamstring before comment on what I might expect? Do you have any suggestions as to what I can try in order to minimize the discomfort? Unless better suggestions come to light, I suppose I'll just load up on Ibuprofen and give it my best. I've bowled with sprained knee ligaments before, so how bad can this be?

Gene, I pulled my right hamstring about three weeks ago two days before my league (pulled it on a Tues. bowl on Thurs.) and you can definitely expect some discomfort but the pain shouldn't be too severe that it would prevent you from bowling.  Since the fourth step is your "power" step, you can expect some discomfort and maybe a decrease in the amount of power potential coming from that leg (most due to being hesitant and not wanting to feel that pain) but it honestly shouldn't be too bad, at the very least it wasn't too bad for me.

Coincidentally, I just pulled my left hamstring on Monday (playing softball, just as I did with the right one and just as you did Gene) so we'll see how it goes tomorrow at league.  I've been limping around pretty good on it but I know I didn't pull this one as bad as the right.  With the right I heard a pop and felt it crawl up the back of my leg, this one wasn't so bad.  But it is my sliding leg, so we'll see how that goes.

You'll have to let us know how it goes Gene!

I tried bowling with a pulled hamstring and it was bad.

I could get to the line pretty good but couldn't get any energy on the ball, meaning i was unable to bend knee at release point. This left me a lot of ten pins to shoot and a few 8,10s.It is not worth the pain in my opinion.

Let your leg heal some more before you try it.

Geez, Bones. I figured you'd offer a miracle cure or suggest an ointment, not get up in my grill for wanting to tough it out! lol. Seriously though, I'm not going to push through any ridiculous pain thresholds here. If I find during practice that I just can't do it, I won't do it. I'm not trying to be macho. The standings don't mean anything in this league, other than pride, so I'm not worried about not being there. I just enjoy bowling, so I figure there's no real harm in trying. I will probably follow generalsleo's suggestion of starting closer to the line and taking shorter steps. Anyhow, thanks for the suggestions.
