Arsenal? How many is too many?
« on: July 14, 2009, 05:05:18 AM »
I'm sure you've seen it-the person who brings 5-7 balls to league.  The person who brings 12, sometimes more to a tournament.  The person who has countless(and relatively new) equipment all over the garage etc.  I currently have 6. 3 I take to league(I alternate 2 with a spare ball) and all 6 to a tourney.  I'm considering adding another ball and had to ask myself, "Damn, do I have too many?"

So, for YOU, how many is too many?

Too many = Not having a difference in reaction between them.

I currently have 7 + plastic in rotation depending on where I am bowling in my area.
2 double totes works just fine for league.

When I cant get them all of them to the lanes... I dont think there really should be a limit but can see why its bad at the same time bring 20 balls and you never learn to adjust you just use the balls for each cond....

A couple of things to consider.  If I keep buying bowling balls and my average is going up, good thing.  If I keep buying bowling balls and my average is declining, its a bad thing.

If you bowl in a league where you are confident that the conditions are the same week in and week out, then maybe three bowling balls are fine.

If you bowl in one of my houses, you have no clue what the shot is going to be.  Its suppose to be a rather high scoring house shot.  Sometimes it is.  If they have a touranment during the day, (Sunday night league), and they use a tournament shot, first the lane guy doesn't even know what shot it is, and then there is a possibility he will do a fill shot over the tournament pattern, not do a fill shot over the tournament pattern, do a fill pattern over the days shot or not do a fill shot over the days pattern.  I found this out when I was new to the league and after three weeks of a fill shot over a THS shot, we got a tournament shot that had two squads of women bowlers on it, 4 women to a lane and the second squad got off so late they didn't even do the fill shot.  So now I have to make sure that I have a varity of bowling balls in my bag when I go there on sunday nights.

At the end of last season, this was my problem.  So far this summer, I've actually gotten rid of 6 and picked up two more.  There is quite a distinct variation now.

I usually take 3 plus a spare ball, but usually use 1 plus the spare on typical house shots.

During practice I sometimes throw 2 balls, just in case there's a dramatic difference in pin carry. Once I settle in on "the choice" I try to stick with it and just move on the lanes as the shot transitions.

My current summer league has us bowling 4 games, moving each game. Because of this I usually get to move on the lanes a little more than normal.

Some guys are waaaaaay to quick to change equipment, trying to stay on the same part of the lane instead of moving. This usually costs them a few extra frames trying to play something that may not be there.

To answer the original question, 3-4 max. should be plenty on the conditions most of us bowl 90% of the time.

I own 11 but 2 are actully "retired"

On my house shot league....3 (2 first ball and a spare) there is a women's league before us and the lanes can get a little squirley.

On my other league we use harder shots and change them every 8-11 weeks. For that night I will usually bring 6 cause the shot can change depending on who we bowl that night.

I'd rather have too many then not enough, If you feel like there is a chance you might need it at a tournament, then bring it.

Good post Deadbait---you hit the main points right on the head.
Personally,I've seen way too many league (once a week and no tourneys)bowlers go out and buy whatever they see being thrown that week on TV. There's one guy in one of the leagues I bowl in that constantly gives advice and tell the other bowlers on his team what to do. Problem is,he doesn't average but barely over 170!!!!
And yes, I've been guilty of it in the past. But i've learned over the last couple of years to stick with a ball and adjust. I do change balls, but only when the need to do so is blatantly obvious. I now carry a 4 ball arsenal. A weak one for dryer lanes, a pin high resin for most nights, and a stronger drill for the really bad carrydown nights and for tournament shots that are heavier than what I see most of the time.
Too many balls is when you have them but don't know when to use them, how to adjust, and when to put said ball(s) away.....

That's like asking my wife how many shoes are too many shoes or how many purses are too many purses.

There are some questions you just don't ask

Seriously, it depends on the scope of bowling conditions the bowler faces. Being a betting kind of guy, I'd bet more than 90% of all bowlers do more than 90% of their bowling in the same bowling center. Unless they're bowling in leagues that put out different conditions, that doesn't require much equipment for success, but having more equipment doesn't always hurt. It doesn't always help, either.

That's the point where it is too much: when it ceases to help and begins to hurt. Anyone besides me have a team mate like that?

One can NEVER own too many balls.  It's a lot of fun having so many that I forget that I own certain balls...it's like Christmas whenever I start digging around on the rack.

I typically bring 4 balls with me to league.

For my summer PBA Experience League I've been carrying my Break S-75, Break Pearl, Roto-Grip Neptune, and something else from the rack just for kicks.

Last week I brought along my Storm El Nino at 2000 abralon.  No mid-lane whatsoever!  Man, was I surprised when it skidded past my break point the first time I threw it.  Came in handy on the Cheetah, though, giving me some extra length and a nice pop at the end.
