Article in Bowling this Month regarding ball life
« on: January 22, 2004, 09:10:10 AM »
Has anyone read the article in this months BTM regarding the life stages of a ball? It illustrates 4 stages, and what a bowler should expect out of each of them.
Fascinating reading!

Yeah mumzie, can you tell us all about it as I am not a suscriber either and in fact there are a lot of people on this site that aren't suscribers.

What I found interesting in the article was the stage 3 and stage 4 info - and the types of bowlers that would FAVOR a ball in each stage.
I don't have the article with me (that's why I didn't supply details last night, either), but I think that this info would help us all figure out what we have, what we want, and what we're most comfortable with.

And - as an added bonus - if we adopt the 4 stage description here on ball reviews, when I list a ball for sale, I can state what stage the ball is currently in - that will give the potential buyer a LOT of information.

mummzie, my mistake asking for the article. I have the BTM magazine. For what ever reason, I was thinking Bowler's Journal.

I can't get a copy right now, would someone briefly summarize the stages and what bowlers would like each stage?

My favorite ball signed up for a 12-step program, but is still in denial.  Maybe this 4-phase thing would work better for the round guy.  Clue him in, he's a little dense at times, but maybe with a little work, he could be porous again.

It is in this months (January) BTM. I believe it was really in Torgy’s tips. He was stating that balls go thru 4 stages of performance.

I’m sure I will not be 100% correct on this but here it goes (I don’t have the article with me).

Stage 1 – When the ball is brand new. The ball is at its most pristine condition. Optimal performance. Will last 20 to 30 games depending on ball, lane conditions and care. Bowlers who want this performance all the time had better have a deep pocket book.

Stage 2- Balls starts to track, absorb oil, pores close up, particles wear etc. This stage will generally last till around 200 to 300 games are on the ball.

Stage 3 – Balls can be cleaned and/or resurface to regain some of the lost performance but because of the oil, pores, etc the performance gain will be short lived.

Stage 4 – Balls that stabilized at the bottom of their performance range. I believe they said that some heavier handed bowlers would prefer balls at this stage to get away from some of the over/under fresher aggressive balls may give.

I read the article. and thought the part where
Torgy suggests you take your stage 3 ball clean it
well and then lightly scuff with the track with a
piece of Scotch Brite to create the right amount of friction
was interesting.
This will help get the ball back to stage 2. You need to
repeat this each time the ball is used.
High rev. players create there own friction and can even use
stage 4 balls playing down and in.Most of us like stage 2.
I scuffed my stage 3 ball and will see how it reacts today???
