Title: Article on bowling terminology/slang
Post by: Gizmo823 on September 16, 2013, 11:31:47 AM
I'm not trying to solicit here or anything, but I was given a section at www.epicbowling.com to write for, I've already posted several articles, and I'm doing one about bowling terminology and slang.  I'm trying to collect as many as possible, so I wanted to ask for all I could get.  None of this is copywritten, there's no money involved, etc, just purely for information and the spread of knowledge.  I have just about all the technical terminology I can find, but I'm more looking for slang, like brooklyn, greek church, can opener, etc, more interesting stuff like that.  Thanks!

Have you Googled the term 'bowling glossary' yet?  There are several sites that already have listings compiled.

Here are a few that came up:

http://www.bowlingfans.com/glossary/bowling_terms_b.php (http://www.bowlingfans.com/glossary/bowling_terms_b.php)

http://www.bowling2u.com/trivia/glossary/glossary.asp?OpMode=List&Key=ALL (http://www.bowling2u.com/trivia/glossary/glossary.asp?OpMode=List&Key=ALL)

http://www.bowlersparadise.com/help/glossary.shtml (http://www.bowlersparadise.com/help/glossary.shtml)

Edited to add:
Not that I am saying not to do this article, I am just saying that you can find those slang terms in the glossaries.

Lmao, well maybe there isn't a point to writing the article then if they already exist!  Maybe I could just post a link or something, that might be better.  Thanks!

Gizmo, maybe you could still do an article on the slang but one on the history of some of them.  Brooklyn vs Jersey.  Some of the slang is very regional so you would have to speak to bowlers from various parts of the US to see which are still in use and where.

Don't I remember a thread here on that subject a couple or three years ago?  --  JohnP

A new one for the glossary. In my Monday Nite league, when bowlers throw their AMF IncInerates and strike......they yell "WARNING.......pins are falling over here!!"

Also hot lately....."Fire in da Hole!!" when striking!

We definitely have a very lively bunch of bowlers in our league!!

Gizmo, I have a favorite phrase that I semi-yell whenever I miss an easy spare---"Start the car" !!! It beats the usual 4 letter words. A number of guys in my league have picked up the phrase and will scream it out where appropriate.

If someone on your team whiffs a spare:

"way to go for count!" LOL

Playing off of this, when someone gets a couple pins on a split without converting and someone says "a good bowler takes 2" I always reply with "a good bowler wouldn't have left that"

Fire in da Hole has been used lately in my leagues in BG.

St. Croix, maybe Long Gone Daddy could share some of the words he uses when he misses an easy spare. I can just imagine, and do you think that LGD tries to intimidate opposing bowlers as much as tries to intimidate people in the forums?

"Flat as a pancake" or DOA (dead on arrival)-description of a ball that hits the pocket with nothing on it. I had one of them last night for an 8-10 split.
