I believe splits are like strikes, it takes the right entry angle and speed to get a split. The type of split you get often tells what you might want to change. For instance a 7 9 spit tells me the ball is usually driving to hard into the pocket. Although you can not eliminate the splits, you can reduce the chance of getting one with small changes at release.
