Tired of people saying the sport is too easy? Me too!
« on: October 04, 2006, 10:13:03 AM »
Well I for one am extremely tired of people who say that shooting 700, 800, 300 isn't a real accomplishment anymore.  I am sure there are houses out there where it is much easier than at other houses, and viewpoints are going to come from every direction.

Regardless, I think someone who shoots a 700 series had to be doing SOMETHING right.  To me it is irresponsible to say that "so many people" can shoot 700 and not even shoot that well.  I beg to differ.

I agree that conditions can help, but you still have to repeat shots to some degree to break 700.  I for one have worked my butt off to get better at this game, investing a ton of time, money, effort, and studying.  Not everyone does this, and I agree it is frustrating when someone who hasn't put in the effort gets "lucky", but to me every 700 deserves credit.

My brother, who averages right at 200, has practiced a ton and has put in the time to the degree his financial and work situation will allow, and yet has only ever shot 700 ONCE!  It is a big deal to him.  It is still a big deal to me, even though 1/4 of my sets last season were over 700.  I even have 3 so far this year, yet I am always looking at that mark, and striving for it.

I have never shot a 300 despite having strung strikes like mad over 2-3 games.  Last week I had 26 out of 28 strikes, but still no 300!  Don't tell me that it is "easy".  I am well known in my center as the best bowler to never punch 300.  In fact, I have come closer to 800 than I have to 300.  I will probably get the 800 before the 300!

So I hit my goal of 700 25% of the time; hardly easy, and I carried a 221 average last season (93 games)!

I watch the BR Scratch Doubles results and there are obviously some REAL bowlers out there who could shoe up with anyone, any time.  Let's give people like this CREDIT for their accomplishments, instead of dilluting them by saying how "easy" it is all the time.

I submit that the people who say it is so easy are often people who rarely have been there; they are commenting about people they have seen, envious of the result, but unwilling to put in the actual effort to get there themselves.  No one shoots 700 every week except for the ULTRA-ELITE.  I tip my cap to you folks.

There is one bowler in my center (mega cranker- around 500+ RPMS) who could claim "elite" status.  I would agree that while there are other with a ton of talent, this one bowler has the complete package of talent, versatility, arsenal, experience, consistency, and results to back it up.  I have seen him call an 800 in the 3rd frame of the 1st game and deliver!  He routinely wins tournaments on tougher conditions as well.  I would say he is regional PBA material if only his work situation would allow.

He averages 235.  I agree that there is that "it" factor that separates the elite from the rest.  I am not there, but getting closer all the time!

I think until someone averages a 700 every night, like this guy does, they can't say that it is "easy" to hit 700.  If it is so easy, why doesn't everyone AVERAGE a 700 if it is such an AVERAGE accomplishment?

The medium average for league bowlers is 178. The shot is not to easy for alot of bowlers. The problem stems from the fact that some high average bowlers can't except the fact the 178 ave. bowlers have the occassional good game or set and beat them when handicap is involved. This even though the high average bowler prevails most of the time. As far as high averages and honor scores, really happens with a about 10 percent of bowlers. I say stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and just worry about yourself!IMHO

I agree 100% The complaining is getting old. If bowling is so disgusting to the whiners, let them take up a new sport or shut the heck up.

Amen from the choir. As a matter of fact this is one of my biggest pet peaves about coming on this site. Everyone here shoots 750 in their sleep, right?
I for one highly doubt it. It is very discouraging when you put in hours of pratice and study to average 200 and the only thing people can say is why don't you average 230? I feel like I am getting to a point where I can finally compete with the majority of the better players in my area, I should be proud of my accomplishments but all I can think about is the idiots who want to give everyone a hard time for not averaging 230. I never bowled until I was 24. Never came up in leagues since I was 6 years old. Most of these people have 20+ years of bowling on me yet look down on me because I can't average the same as them?
Must be nice to think that much of yourself(get a life).

I chuckle at the people who say that the shot is easier, but only average around 160. Not saying 160 is bad, but when the shot is suppsed to be easy, why aren't your scores higher.

I know that our lanes were double stripped last week and the back-ends were realyl hooking. Really had a hard time picking up the 6-10. bal went out and then hooked back just before the pins. Was really hard to get a good line. Then when carry down happened, it was even more difficult. Ball would roll longer and then just snap really hard.

I have never shot that elusive 700.  Last year, I finally came close shooting several sets in the 680+ range.  So I feel it will come, if I work a little harder at being more consistent with my shotmaking.  Working two jobs and having a family to support really wrecks havoc with my bowling, making it almost impossible to get out to practice on refining my game.

I will consider it a great accomplishment for me when I finally break through that barrier.  It does not bother me when other bowlers that average over 220, and bowl in three or more leagues a week and are always practicing think that 700 is no big deal.  They have put in the hard work and preseverance it takes to get to that level, I can appreciate that.

As far as conditions in my house go, it is a THS, but the outer boards do have some oil on them, so shots thrown outside don't bounce back to the pocket. There has been just one 300 and no 800's thrown this season yet, so it is not too easy to score on.

Ive shot plenty of 7's and a few 300's and I still find bowling challenging and enjoyable.I too get tired of reading how the shot today is too easy.by the way,I only averaged 200 for a few weeks last year so I'm not the most consistant bowler in town.

Easy shots have been around for quite awhile but what was not as prevalent until 15 years ago are machines that strip daily (Sanction Machine) and resin balls (Excalibur) that take advantage of high friction areas created by better lane maintenance machines and better playing surfaces.

When I started bowling 27 years ago, challenging houses were the norm and there were just a few houses that were notorious for high scoring.  Now the situation is exactly opposite.

Is bowling easy, No.  Has technology blurred the line between a mediocre player and a good player, Yes.  Good roll (and by roll I don't mean hook) is no longer necessary in most environments to score.

Not for me it isn't........I'll keep this brief by saying that my average is lower today and has been since 2003, than it was for the years of 1989 thru 2003. That should tell others of whether it is too easy today for me. I can't speak for them.

I started two years ago into this great sport.  I was just getting into college, and I found a job at the only bowling alley in town as the "Pinchaser", if you will.  I got a couple of hand-me-down balls from some of the regulars there, and I started bowling with some friends in a league out of town.  The person who asked me has been my friend throughout childhood and had bowled for almost 15 years.  Although he had won tournaments and been in tons of brackets to his avail, he himself had never bowled a 7.  After the winter league ended I was asked to bowl by one of the house guys in Murray (where I go to school) to bowl with him in a summer league.  The first night I arrived late, threw one ball for practice, and ended up shooting 718.  Thank goodness Jesse didn't tell me what was going on, or I probably would have choked under the pressure and blew it.

My average after my first season was 175.  I now, after two full years average 210 in both of the houses in which I bowl.  Granted, I have very talented coaches who are willing to help me...but I have taken CONSIDERABLE amounts of time and money studying this game in every aspect.  I now am the person someone comes to in order to ask questions about equipment, and mainly because I have memorized ball specs on everything since the Omega Lion.  I have watched more videos and looked at more websites than I would admit to average people, but there is no doubt in my mind that many of you understand where I'm coming from.  There is a necessary skill to this game, and not everyone has it.  That does not mean, however, that ANYONE couldn't go bowling and have a great time.  My friend Jonathan (the 14 yr./no7 bowler) was upset with me at first-mainly because I reached something in a year that he had strived for for over 14- but nevertheless he was very proud of me...and I of myself.  Since I have bowled 3 more 700's with 280 being my highest game.  I don't expect 700's, 300's, or 800's.  I work, practice, watch, and go out every night trying to perfect my game and make myself a better bowler.

As for anyone who would say that 700 is mediocre...do what I've been known to do in other situations.  Ask them to go bowling, make them give you 50 bucks, and tell them that "All you have to do is shoot 700".  In most, if not all, instances, this has brought many people back down to earth.  I am very proud of my accomplishments, regardless if some PBA, "Elite", or house bowler has something to say otherwise.  Bowling is always changing, and anyone who can change with it has my respect.  But sometimes people need to either enjoy the game for what it is, or take their money and knowledge to whatever game can hold their interest.

Yet another example of the FACT that this game is always a challenge:  I bowled 2 leagues tonight, lit up the first set 238-267-235 for a 740.  Switched lanes for the other league, and proceeded to roll 194-181-153 for a nice 528.  Again, I know what the hell I am doing and how to make any and all adjustments, but couldn't find ANYTHING to work with in the 2nd set.

Just goes to show you that this sport can and will humble you in a matter of moments.  I am proud of that 740, and the 528 tells me that I EARNED it!
