What cause's bad speed control on each shot ?
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:01:25 AM »
I am in a terrible slump and I'm not sure what the problem is. I think it may be fast feet, but my sped control is totally off. I go from a normal 15.5 mph to as high as 16.3 or as low 14.5. I've even had a couple of shots in the 17's. You can't adjust off bad speed control on the lane. It's so frustrating.

first and foremost I would not believe the speed-o's at the center... if the tracker is in the back of the lane (most seem to be) then your entry angle will factor into the speed it is telling you... I highly doubt your fluctuating 3 mph's shot to shot.

Just settle down, watch your feet and go through the motions... dont pay attention to the speed-o. Speed control is all about repeating your approach, focus on that.

Not having a free arm swing is one thing that can cause this.

"Control" is the key word here ... a free armswing is NOT controlled drop the ball into your "swing slot/swing plane" and get your body out of the away.

Your feet follow the swing ... not the other way around if you slow down/speed up your swing to "catch" your feet, you have LOST the free armswing.

I like to refer to this as "getting the hell out of my own way".

Lack of speed control will normally come into play with one of two things, either you are muscling the ball and it is not being done in a repeated manor, or you are not pushing out to the same point on your push away. With out watching you bowl I can not tell you which one it is, but if you just focus on where you start your swing and getting a smooth effortless swing they should both go away.

i dont know how you fit your ball, but i have noticed when my thumb swells i have more speed because i overemphasize getting out of the ball.If your grip is loose you will squeeze and this will slow down your speed and throw timing off because your concentrating too hard on not dropping ball ,just my two cents ,but u have to have a good comfy gripp to be relaxed and in controll

If you're relying on a speed readout provided on the score screen, it probably is measuring the speed at about 50 feet down the lane.  I've found a lot of difference simply from throwing my ball (with the same swing and release) in the oil versus in the dry.  As much as 2 mph.  Friction from the dry area of the lane slows the ball down much more than when in the oil.  Plus from the dry area you're coming in at a much steeper angle through the sensors.  Try it and let us know what you see on your deliveries.  --  JohnP
