Lofting a ball...
« on: May 20, 2008, 05:08:34 AM »
How do you loft a ball? I was watching bowlers at states this past weekend. I was noticing that those who could loft a ball out to the arrows (there were about 3 around me) consistently they were keeping the ball in the pocket a higher percentage. My issue was trying to keep the ball from trying to turn before the arrows.

There seemed to be more oil beyond the arrows.

So how does one start lofting the ball?

I late time myself hold my left hand underneath the ball and squeeze slightly, i can chuck it about 2 feet past the arrows and pretty much hit within a 2-3 board area.

Practice it will help and be careful you can blow out a tendon if you strain your elbow or wrist too much, I am very strong upper body wise so for me to chuck it that far is not hard.

It lets me stay in the track when others have migrated to 4-5 arrows and deeper, i prefer an up the back release but i can use a total spinner release if needed.

It lets me score when others are lost, i usually grind out 190-210 doing this method.

I'm the opposite actually, I tend to "overloft" I got to this point from bowling on dry lanes. The way I worked on it was putting a piece of tape on the lane, and I would target the piece of tape with an attempt to get the ball to land there.

Normally you might need a little help to see if you got it there or not, but if you are very attentive you can tell, sometimes a different perspective will help.

the key is to not turn the ball early in the downswing. when you turn the ball early you tend to have an early read or early reaction. for me its simple. i stand a little more upright, still having knee bend. when i get to the line im not as down as i normally am and just keep my hand under the ball. theres really no need to help grab the ball. by raising up you bring the bottom of your swing up and then just staying under the ball allows you to get the ball on the lane. like i said make sure you dont grab the ball or turn it early.

I personally like the "towel drill".  Lay a towel length-wise towards the arrows.  Practice lofting over the towel, and hitting the target arrow.  It's like riding a bike.  After you learn it, it becomes second nature.
