Sounds the hole is far too tight for your thumb and the magic carpet. If your thumb fits in the hole properly, it usually has to be opened up a little to a lot, depending, if you add the magic carpet.

Don't use it until your thumb heals. It does not sound right to me.

What these guys said is right, you may need to open the hole up a little. BUT you said the SIDE Of your thumb. If it is the Side of your thumb and not the BACK of your thumb you may have put the carpet too far to one side. Make sure that the carpet hits you right in the center of your knuckle on your thumb.
IF you get the placement a little off you can cut up the side of your thumb.

I also received my magic carpet sample yesterday, and I'm very impressed. I put one in my Thing and Anomaly, but the envelope was wet and I don't know how long one of them will stay in.

Won't that hurt?

I guess the blood acts as a lubricant?

Seriously, a lot of people do cut or trim their Magic Carpets so they fit better in the thumbhole.  Once you know how you need it, it is a simple matter to trim it before using it.

How long has this product been around.?

I don't know for sure how long Ron has been selling his Carpets, but I've known about them for at least a couple of years now, probably more.
