Title: Average
Post by: SjuStorm on May 26, 2008, 07:09:27 AM
Just browsing through league secretary and some of the high averages.  Ian Lang of New York averaged 254 for 102 games.  Anyone know of anything higher so far this season?

that is impressive but with a average like that you wonder how he does in other houses or why he's not out on tour. ive seen bowlers that can average 230+ at there own spot but you take them a town over and they cant hold a 200. not saying anything against that guy he may be a future pba champ im not doubting his ability i dont care what kind of shot you have to average that you got to hit the same spot

Didnt Jeff Carter avg around 260+ before he went on the pba tour?

If you take a look at his stats on bowl.com, you will notice that he has averaged ridiculously high at a few houses in his area for quite a few years now.

With steady high scores like his, I doubt very much he can't adapt to any old house and to whatever condition.  For one thing, he must be one absolute top notch spare shooter, for another, he more than likely gets his "fair" share of strikes.

Crown,

I hear ya, but to consistently shoot averages ranging from the 240's to mid 250's, in addition to carrying everything, which is usually a by-product of "friendly" houses when they host powerfully rolled bowling balls, he's gotta be a much better than your average high-average bowler, as far as spare shooting is concerned.

Ian is a very good talent.  He just won a local tourney (the guy on the right is BR member J dubs) > http://www.oldschooltournaments.com/20080504.htm

helped set a state team record > http://www.liusbc.com/HIGH%20TEAM%20SCORE.pdf

and had enough honors scores in one year than most bowlers have in a lifetime.

Of course the leagues that I bowl in are extremely high.  Sad to say, but that's how it is in every house on Long Island.  I bowl everything that I possibly can where the tournaments are fairly local.  There are a couple organizations on Long Island that run or had ran tournaments with competitive shots for us to get better.  I've bowled the World Team Challenges(highest finish 2nd) religiously when they were around and they were great, as well as the High Rollers(6th round), USBC's(5th in Team) etc. Personally I just bowl on what they put out and whatever happens, happens.

About the 254, I'm just glad the seson is finally over.  There were a bunch of weeks that I just wanted to shoot 450 and end the whole thing.  The constant comments when you don't strike on a single ball actually starts to eat at you.  Believe it or not when you hear those things all the time you actually do get pissed when you don't strike.  I remember Jeff Carter writing somewhere that it was the worst thing that he could have done for bowling.  I personally know my limits and know that I have alotttttt of things to work on.  This is why I'm bowling a PBA experience league this summer, so I can see what my flaws are and what I need to work on to get better.

Sheridan is running one on Tuesday nights.  I know about the one at Farmingdale.  It's a great league they run, but the approaches are a disaster.  I bowled there a bunch of times and my knee feels like its gonna fall off everytime I go there.

quote:
what house is running PBA experience out there? i'm bowling one this summer at Maple Lanes here in Brooklyn.

also, since you're in Nassau, you might look into Farmingdale if you want something that isn't an utter joke. if you feel like traveling, Coram puts out a bit of a different shot. i've heard people say Farmingdale is harder than Coram, but i don't know about that.

Yeah I was at Farmingdale for a LIYBT recently on the Viper, and the approaches were sticky as hell. I almost fell flat on my face the first few shots.

I second that.

Bowling at such a high level does have its distractions as you mentioned (I've been in the 240's a few times, so I know about the comments that people make, especially if you're not on any string of strikes for say, half a game or so).

What you've done is monumental, regardless of the shot.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  The nay Sayers (those that say WALL, etc., as if they're not bowling on such a shot themselves), wish they could come close to what you've accomplished

Way to go Ian!

Actually all anyone would have needed to do was check Ian's profile.  3 time collegiate all american and player of the year runner up at st. johns when they were one of the main teams (not that they're not good now, just not compared to when Ian was there).  If I remember correctly I believe he's bowled in quite a few PBA tournaments.  Is that a crazy high average for a season?  Of course it is but he's still one of the better bowlers you'll find.

From what they told me the 1157 was the new USBC national record and also a World record by 2 pins.  They said they had to wait until the season was over to make any annoucement or official record.
