Help , please ....
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:58:38 PM »
Nothing urgent, but I have a question:

I don't want to commit to a full season of bowling, but, there are tournaments all the time in my area (metro Detroit) that I can join at my leisure.  I was thinking that it would be LESS expensive in the long run, ..and less of a commitment as well, but still, ...I'm doing some sort of competing....

Thoughts?

I mean, what's wrong with doing that? Right?

Please, serious thoughts only, thanks all

Jeff,

Couple of factors to depend on when thinking cost:

Do you have to travel much further to tourneys than your local house (gas costs)

Do you cash regularly in these tourneys?

Will the cost of practice for tourneys be so much as not to offset any saving?

Just a some random thoughts...

Are any of these handicap tournaments? If so then you will need to maintain an average or bowl scratch.

The problem I generally have with this line of thinking is that in order to compete effectively you need to bowl on a regular basis in competitive settings.

League bowling can give you practice in the competitive mental area and in the slower pace of tournament play.

Unless you practice religiously your physical game will not be sharp and there are lots of factors of sanctioned play that do not come into focus.

Yes, I'd enter in a handicap division, but ...I'm researching what is available in my area.

All understood, ....but I'd rather not committ to once per week for 33 some odd weeks, ...before equipment you're easily looking at $1000 for a season, ...and  a tourney here or there would only be a couple hundred....

Your leagues must be a lot more expensive than ours. Most here run 12 to 15 a week.

Go join a league ya big douchey cheapskate.

Or you might want to consider subbing for a team.  Subs don't pay and you won't be committed to bowling every week.

I'd see about possibly being a sub for a league or two if you wouldn't have to pay to bowl.  That way you could establish some sort of average and still enter handicap tournaments...

Doesn't look like their website is up to date anyway.  That would worry me.

Don't know how your leagues are set up but one of mine is a 5 man team with a max of 8 members. That way, granted they are couples for the most part, they will bowl about half a season, give or take.

Subs are always needed as well, as said before, it's FREE ! Hard to beat free !

Just something you might see if that would work for ya.

Good Luck !
