Talked to a Local Center's Manager
« on: December 28, 2010, 03:14:53 PM »
Here in the North West suburbs of Minneapolis we have one center that has always been the butt of the jokes for their conditions. The oil was erratic at best with it sometimes not even on the lane. Well I bowled there recently and the oil was a new house pattern and seemed halfway respectable. But, in talking with the center manager he said, "Yeah, we really worked on this pattern over the summer and it seems to be good. Scores are up and while no honors yet we are hoping to see them soon."

Wow... I have to say this is what is wrecking bowling and leading to all these 900's lately. Since when is a pattern better the higher the scores?

I work in a center. When the pattern is messed up and bowlers can't score that is all you hear about that night and the whole week until they bowl again. It gets especially bad the next week before they bowl.
So I can see a center working on their oiling to try and get better scoring conditions to try and get back lost business or grow his leagues.

Since forever.

Bowlers are only as good as the lane man lets them be.

I really don't think this is a news flash but people bowl leagues at houses where they feel the THS is best for their bowling

I bowl at the closest bowling alley and it's one of the areas toughest because of the nerf sideboards!  It's more of a social thing at once a week.

Its all about the cash register.  If the condition was that bad, then, they had very little business.  Put down a good condition and the register is music to the managers ears.  Everyone complains about THS, but lets face it, most of the bowlers rather bowl on it.  You have a high scoring house and the center is packed with bowlers.  You have a low scoring house and they have open play every night all week.  It is what it is.

Is it the "easier" conditions being put down, or is it that the shot is now more consistent?

I understand the whole "higher scores = happier bowlers = more bowlers = more money" concept, but is that what is happening?

Most of the complaints that I hear is when the center changes up the shot.  "Hey, it's oilier than last week" or "guess they didn't put down any oil this week" and the people are usually upset because they didn't bother to bring another ball.

I don't know how many times I've gotten used to the conditions and decided not to bring 4 balls (usually leave 2 in the trunk, but have 2 different cars, so sometimes I don't move all 4 from 1 car to the next) and get to the center to find out I really could have used those other 2 balls.

My main center is pretty good about putting out a fresh shot for leagues.  Still, I find that I actually bowl better on broken down conditions - love bowling on Saturday afternoons after all the kids have torn up the lanes!

I am with you on that one. I think the biggest thing is a center be consisitent. If there is a reason to change, like travel league is coming in next month and we are going to need a wetter shot, then I would suggest tell the leagues you will be making adjustments and why. I think honesty and consistency will make most bowlers happy. In the example, you might even find something that is better than what you had before if you needed to add oil to the pattern. Biggest complaint I hear and I have is not knowing what the lanes will be like from week to week. We have variance in lane to lane that you have to learn, but the lane man can complicate that quickly. When things are consistent, scores go up and guys don't complain so much. That makes life easier for everyone.
