EeGads, I'm releasing from another state...advice?
« on: March 17, 2005, 09:13:58 AM »

Looking for some advice since I'm pretty much trying to coach myself in
this corner of the world.

I've been working on aspects of my approach mechanics picking one thing
at a time and trying to fix/modify that one thing.

Today I really started to pay attention to my release point at the line
and was, well quite honestly, shocked to really notice that my slide stops
so damn short of the line. I didn't have the camera to video, but I'm sliding
and ending up 8inches to a *foot* from the line. I'm right handed, after releasing the ball, I'll look at where I stop sliding with the left foot, and
I'm way short.

I thought, naively, ok, I'll change my start point, take a bigger first step,
etc.... to fix the issue, but everything I tried I still end up at the same location. I have a four step appoach, usually a smallish first step then
regular strides through the final three.

Everything I tried, same place. I just can't seem to make up the difference
on my approach somehow.

Any advice?

I'll try to remember to video myself next time and post my (it would seem)
bad mechanics for everyone to see.

Why not go to the foul line where you want to be at the finish point of the shot, turn your back on the pins, and go through your steps/slide toward the settee?  Once you've gotten into the slide, turn around and face the pins.  There's your new starting point.

(My coach taught me that one).  It's probably worth a try

WillynHook - don't fret it. I'm the same way. After several coaches tried and tried to correct it, they finally gave up. I ALWAYS will end up about 15 or so inches back - the good news is it's consistent. The bad news - moving up on the approach, or trying to take bigger steps, just messes up my timing. So I leave it alone. Works ok for me.

Hmmm... Good idea "LuvTWD".... I'll try that little tip next time.

Mumzie... I'm pretty consistent with my timing this way too, but I'm
trying to really work on all aspects of my game lately. Always looking to
improve.

Stopping short is not a problem, as long as you can do it consistently. As long as your not laying the ball on the approach, you should be ok. I stop fairly far back from the foul line also, its nothing to worry about in my opinion.

I am more than 6', start my approach from the 1st set of dots and make a slow approach - and end up quite far away from the foul line, too (5 step approach!). I think you shouldn't bother too much about it when it comes natural. Most important is a good timing, comsistency and, like TBK25 mentioned, that the ball gets down behind the foul line in the oil.

You could try to get your approach start 8" closer to the foul line, but this might be confusing. I tried to lengthen my approach and take longer steps, but it completely threw off my balance and timing, so I stick with my "small" 5 step approach and pure stroker style.

I would not recommend a longer initial step, because it will make you hurry (fast feet) at the foul line. If you lengthen your approach, hold the ball a bit higher in your adress position and let the pendulum dictate your feet.

In light of today's events, it might be worth resurrecting this thread to discuss merits of possibly leaving a few inches of margin.

The key, as others noted in this thread, is the consistency of your actions that tell you whether there are other mechanical issues to work on as it pertains to the approach.

PBA broadcast, maybe where I'm sliding too ain't to bad afterall. I'm still
gonna work on getting a bit closer though..

I think moving back might help.  It'll speed up your walk naturally a little and you may get closer to the line.
