Back from NJ and bowling with Charlest
« on: July 08, 2008, 02:08:54 AM »
I bowled first at Rockaway Lanes and the shot there was a super easy walled up shot and very consistant. The house was kept in excellent condition, price was $3 a game and employees were very pleasant and professional.  I only brought the Hybrid Megaton with me since I was flying with only one bag.  Ball worked tremendous on their shot.

Then I had the pleasure of bowling with Charlest on the 4th of July at Carolier Lanes. I bowled there when I was a kid about 40 years ago. I was surprised how well the place looked. The shot there was a little longer an the Megatonmight not have been the right ball but the sht was still consistant.  I believe longer oil then at Rockaway.

Bowling with Charlest was great.  He has tremendous knowledge of the game and would make an outstanding coach.  He recognized the problem that I was having with my release and lucky for me, we spent some time workingon my follow through. It was great talking to Charlest about bowling and many other subjects outside of bowling. It was great to meet someone from Ballreviews that has the knowledge of Charlest and submits so many post on here.

Oh man I remember the days of Edison Lanes when they had the 100+ lanes...was it 108 and 5 desks?? We bowled our High School State finals there a couple times in the early 80's..(ugh admitting age..).

I grew up in Northern Joisey and used to bowl out of Leisure Lanes in Fairfield  (with someone you may have heard of: Ken Jocobosky who regularly handed me my head and my ego in a bowl) and bowl a little bit of the Pezzano's JBT (where Parker Bohn III and Charlie Bruno among many others handed me my head and ego in a bowl).  I bowled Rockaway way back when, and had to apply Pledge to my brand new White Dot to keep the ball in play...lol  Carolier was always an amazing house that is for sure!

Ah...just reminiscing about the good ole days..:-)

I feel like I'm intruding on old home week, , but then I've only lived here since 1977, 31 years, ,  originally from Brooklyn.

Just kidding keep them coming. See what you started, Barry.

Srlunatic,  I go back about another 10 years because I went in the Navy in 1973.  I think you're right though, it might have been 108.

Don't worry Charlest, your always welcome in our wondering back in time.

Charlest,

Man I could have used your ball surface expertise back then with my LT-48, my Bleeder, and my White Dot!!!..*laugh*

Nic,

I think it was like 108 but my sinility is probably blinding me a little.  If I remember right weren't the approaches a tad shorter than normal? I remember my first ball there in State practice and I slide at the arrows!

I was only there once or twice. I wasn't into travelling and bowling back then.

So why do the numbers 101 and 111 stick in my mind for old Edison Lanes???

FYI there's now a Pathmark supermarket there, grossing well over a $million$ a week, more than the owners of Edison ever dreamed of.

Charlest,

Not sure why those numbers....the only house I ever bowled in with an odd number was in England...had 9 lanes......was very cool....

Ah....Pathmark.....had that an A&P and Shop-Rite to choose from back then....seemed mom always went for the Shop-Rite.

Now I am dreaming of the Versailles Diner and a real Joisey Milk-Shake...and maybe some Scrapple and Eggs...lol

Now ya talking!!!

Charlest, my sister in law and family are coming this way the week of the 20th (they're staying in Jersey).  Anyways, I'm free to come down there anytime from Weds. til Saturday (26th) noon.  So, if you don't hear anything, I'll throw stuff in the car and drive down.

That's 2 weeks away, V. Any day but Wednesday.
Remind me then. I'll write it down anyway.

Joe, maybe one day I will also since one of my Sons is moving from Oklahoma to Albany, NY. I know Jeff lives in NJ, but if I one day make it to NY, I will be in that region of the United States.

Lane,

I'll be in Vegas first week of August but sans bowling equipment. 40th anniversary and wife has every freaking second of those 6 days fully charted already. Type "A" behavior. Other than that, no trips scheduled in the near future. Sorry. But thanks for the invite. I know it's a standing one.

Jim,

You have no idea how far it is from Albany to central New Jersey! If you can do it, by all means you're welcome. (Mapquest shows 3 hours and 180 miles from me to generic Albany. NY. That's a lot closer that I thought.)

No, you don't want to see me bowl. I can't apply my knowledge to me,  , honestly. I have flashes of brilliance for about 3 frames then reality sets in.

That's one and a half frames more than I have.

Strike and a nine-miss.

Agree with most... would love to pick Jeff's brains.

You and I can go anytime, of course. Carolier seems to be oiling regularly (unlike during leagues. )
