Title: Back from NJ and bowling with Charlest
Post by: Nicanor on July 08, 2008, 02:08:54 AM
I bowled first at Rockaway Lanes and the shot there was a super easy walled up shot and very consistant. The house was kept in excellent condition, price was $3 a game and employees were very pleasant and professional.  I only brought the Hybrid Megaton with me since I was flying with only one bag.  Ball worked tremendous on their shot.

Then I had the pleasure of bowling with Charlest on the 4th of July at Carolier Lanes. I bowled there when I was a kid about 40 years ago. I was surprised how well the place looked. The shot there was a little longer an the Megatonmight not have been the right ball but the sht was still consistant.  I believe longer oil then at Rockaway.

Bowling with Charlest was great.  He has tremendous knowledge of the game and would make an outstanding coach.  He recognized the problem that I was having with my release and lucky for me, we spent some time workingon my follow through. It was great talking to Charlest about bowling and many other subjects outside of bowling. It was great to meet someone from Ballreviews that has the knowledge of Charlest and submits so many post on here.

Thank you, Nicanor. The pleasure was all mine. Hope your trip back home was uneventful.

He has a devastatingly simple and concise game and armswing. Wish he would throw 16 lbs, as he's as strong as some 6'5" guys I know. Plus he's another "as nice as you could want" type of guy. Wish I had a chance to pick his brain about some house repairs I wanted to do.

That coaching was a 2 way street: he pointed out some crap I was doing with my hand and the ball behind my back. A major problem I developed over the past 6 - 8 years. If I get a little more backswing into my delivery, I think I can cure it.

Very interesting bowling on the 4th, when they opened at 1 PM. Suprised at how many people were there and that they had oiled. THAT shocked me.

Nicanor, glad to learn you enjoyed yourself!

Jeff is definitely G2G (Good to Go)!!!  Had a chance to practice with him on the 28th, but couldn't make it.  I've practiced with him numerous times and had tons of fun.

Jeff, let me know so I can plan to take the day off

As soon as he tells me, I'll tell you.
You and I can go anytime, of course. Carolier seems to be oiling regularly (unlike during leagues. )

hmmm might have to join you charlest.

all the lanes by me arent oiling and i let them know yesterday that they lost me as a customer unless they start oiling again (EDISON lanes). edison was bought out which is why it isnt called brunswick lanes anymore... thought it would get better and had high hopes as its the closest lanes to me. (but even when they do oil it isnt stripped properly so I really dont feel like waiting for them to oil anyway. $1.75 is cool but not if the lanes are shot.

i never cared before and didnt want to take the drive to carolier but now that ive gotten more serious about my game i cant take the bad lanes anymore. maybe jersey lanes could be an option but usually their prices are pretty high unless I was to bowl during the day hours... but i work during the day (doesnt everyone?)

Id like to just even watch him bowl so I can put a face to his name. he has so much knowledge of ball reaction that i would have to pick his brain

icewall,

Brunswick Edison used to have good oil. About 3 years back, we had a little get BR.com together there and the guy who asked us to go there almost had to apologize for how much oil was there.

I don't know how much oil Carolier actually applies. They do have Brunswick's Anvillane which is the lowest friction lane surface available. So they don't need much real oil. Anyway, it's always blocked in the morning and afternoon. Oil line is arounf the 7 board. At night, it depends on how they re-oiled. At the 5 PM re-oiling, they stopped stripping the backends so we had carrydown  during this past winter, for the first time in 8 years since they removed the Guardian Overlay and installed the Anvillanes.

FYI during the summer, on Thursdays at 7 PM they have the PBA Experience league.

I lived in Edison when they had the 100 lane house.  Use too go there from school when I went to Edison HS.  At Carolier the linage was less then $2 a game.  When Charlest and I was bowling he was surprised on how powerful his Creature was reacting on the lanes.  Charlest has a very strong release.

I have two 16 LB bowling balls drilled (Cell and Gravity Shift) but I haven't thrown them yet.  I use to box for the Navy boxing team and Tidewater Ametuer SP? boxing asocitaion and broke a bone in my hand about 2 inches back from my knuckle. For years it pained me to throw 16 LB bowling balls. The hand seems like it has healed and now I only have occasional arthritis pain. So I'm ready to try those 16 LBers.  Mark Baker says I have my ball speed up to 17.5, so it might be the right time to try.

Its amazing how two guys who never met meet at a bowling ally and bowl for the first time and feel comfortable enough to help each other with their games without being defensive.  It was a great time.

US Airways going home was perfect.  On time, no problems with cabin pressure while landing and the crew was very professional.

Charlest,

I worked on my sister's house from the time we stopped bowling till 11 pm that night and the whole next day.  She said the local handyman gets $65-*85 an hour and he doesn't even have a good rap.  Message me or call me and I'll give you my email address for suggestions or to just to say hi.

Thanks again,
Barry

The above reply shows you how great a guy Barry/Nicanor really is.

Barry,

I only suggested the 16 lbs because of your strength and I think it potentially (not sure) could help with that follow through problem. If drilled correctly, it should not be a problem. I also have a broken bone, in the palm of my hand, the meta-carpal, behind the pinky. Lost a boxing match with a wall at Carolier several years back. If your bone healed, you should be fine. Don't puch it one ball at a time.

Glad your flight went well.

Can't believe your own sister made you work that much and in that weather. Handymen in NJ are very expensive, as I mentioned, if you can even get one to your home. That's why I try to do every single thing myself. Still haven't gotten to those bricks on the front steps.

It was great to meet you and to bowl with you.

Jeff

dont worry charlest, im the same way. I drive my friends nuts talking about carry down and getting behind the ball... playing down and in. they look at me like im an alien. then one of them always says... "well why are you complaining if you know what to do".

I bowled at clark... stopped for 3-4 years after they closed and then started bowling at edison. so back then edison had oil, but for the most part it was light but at least the backends were clean.

right now i cant do the PBAX as im bowling a doubles league at garwood. which surprisingly when the league is on the lanes have been very nice (med/heavy oil for my release)

I also wanted to leave edison because well... charlest can feel my pain. the lanes have been so shot that my lanemasters buzz just doesnt work at all. and he knows just how bad it is to leave a nice ball like that at home.

Icewall,

I mentioned the PBAX, not to participate, just to look and see what's happening. FYI a close acquaintance, Bob "Wrongfoot" Caruso, is a model of consistency though few like his "style".

Funny, right now, I pray for a place to use my Buzz. Maybe this week I'll bring it to Carolier. Just lately I've been practicing outside lines.

FYI you also should be able to use the Buzz at Carolier.

Oh man I remember the days of Edison Lanes when they had the 100+ lanes...was it 108 and 5 desks?? We bowled our High School State finals there a couple times in the early 80's..(ugh admitting age..).

I grew up in Northern Joisey and used to bowl out of Leisure Lanes in Fairfield  (with someone you may have heard of: Ken Jocobosky who regularly handed me my head and my ego in a bowl) and bowl a little bit of the Pezzano's JBT (where Parker Bohn III and Charlie Bruno among many others handed me my head and ego in a bowl).  I bowled Rockaway way back when, and had to apply Pledge to my brand new White Dot to keep the ball in play...lol  Carolier was always an amazing house that is for sure!

Ah...just reminiscing about the good ole days..:-)

Mike

Srlunatic,  I go back about another 10 years because I went in the Navy in 1973.  I think you're right though, it might have been 108.

Charlest,

Man I could have used your ball surface expertise back then with my LT-48, my Bleeder, and my White Dot!!!..*laugh*

Nic,

I think it was like 108 but my sinility is probably blinding me a little.  If I remember right weren't the approaches a tad shorter than normal? I remember my first ball there in State practice and I slide at the arrows!

I was only there once or twice. I wasn't into travelling and bowling back then.

So why do the numbers 101 and 111 stick in my mind for old Edison Lanes???

FYI there's now a Pathmark supermarket there, grossing well over a $million$ a week, more than the owners of Edison ever dreamed of.

Charlest,

Not sure why those numbers....the only house I ever bowled in with an odd number was in England...had 9 lanes......was very cool....

Ah....Pathmark.....had that an A&P and Shop-Rite to choose from back then....seemed mom always went for the Shop-Rite.

Now I am dreaming of the Versailles Diner and a real Joisey Milk-Shake...and maybe some Scrapple and Eggs...lol

Vegas,

Only 5 hours away.  August: possibly between 106 and 110 degrees during the day. No kidding.  I'll be in Alaska last week of July first week on August.

I was riding cross country from NJ, to Niagra Falls through part of Canada down to Detroit all the way to Yellowstone and down to Vegas in August. Coming South on 15 and outside of Vegas it was 106.  The bond material of my rear tire melted and without getting a flat, I lost all the tread on my rear tire.  You would have thought it was a re-tread.

The walk through the Vegas strip at night is tremendous though.  During the day, I hope you're finding shelter.

Not my first, second or 49th choice. We're meeting friends from back home in Brooklyn we haven't seen in 25 years, who are also celebrating their 40th anniversary. So we'll try to stay in the A/C. Besides, it's a dry heat. If you think that doesn't matter, try mowing the lawn on one of these days when it's ONLY 85 degrees, but the humidity is 75%!!

Jeff,
I agree about the "dry heat" thing. Many years ago I lived in the greater Houston area, and I'll take dry over humid any day!

I agree about the humidity being a factor.  But so many people that think dr heat isn't that bad usually wind up with a very bad sunburn and sunburn ery quickly.  Also heat stroke is a major problem as well as dehydration that sneaks up on you because the water in your body is being sucked dry.

Just recommend if you're walking during heat of day to walk through some of the beautiful casinos and drink some water.
