Back In The Game
« on: January 09, 2014, 01:47:35 PM »
I just got back into bowling after about 15 years and over the course of that time I have no idea what happened to my gear.  Granted, by todays standards the balls probably weren't very good but I liked them.  I had an LT48 that was given to me by a teammate and a Beast.  Using these two balls I was carrying a 170-172 average the last few years that I bowled.  Fast forward to the present....  Needing a ball I found a new (ie never been drilled) Brunswick Zone for $10.00.  I thought it was a good deal so I bought it then paid another $30 to have it drilled.  So far so good....  Except I hate this ball!!!  It's like learning to bowl all over again throwing a straight ball.  It has no (or very little) break to it.   I don't know anything about drilling bowling balls but from what I've read, it sounds like they can be drilled to give different characteristics as far as breaking, etc.  So did the kid at the pro shop not drill this ball correctly or is/was this typical for the Zone.  And if it is typical, what ball should I be looking for that will give me similar results and characteristics of the old LT48 without spending a bunch of money??

Thanks!!
Aaron

Sounds like you bought a Target Zone, especially given the price you paid for it.  It's plastic, nothing you do will make it hook more.  I'd say you're in need of a couple hour conversation with a pro shop operator so he can get you updated on everything going on in the sport now.  It's nothing like what it was back then.

What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Quick update.....
After doing a lot of research online (including reading lots of ball reveiws on this site) I just purchased a used Storm Thunderstruck off Craigslist.  As luck would have it, it fits my grip almost perfect.  The span is good but the fingertip grips are maybe a size too small.  Took it (as is) to the lanes where I recently started on a league and bowled a 175, 178 and 156.  Love the way this ball hooks into the pocket and with very few exceptions, never left anything standing on the left side.  And as it turns out, the Zone makes a good spare ball.  So for an investment of just over $100 (2 balls, a 2-ball bag, which was included with the Thunderstruck and shoes) it looks like I'm back into bowling.  And after throwing the Thunderstruck, I'm actually looking forward to it.

Thanks for all the info on this site!!!

I'd definitely take it into a pro shop to have them check the fit to make sure.  It's more important than you realize.  Be like getting a prescription for glasses or contacts but merely getting them "close."  Could cause yourself mechanical or physical problems later down the line.  Good luck!
