Back in the Game - Advice Needed
« on: December 19, 2009, 12:31:57 AM »
Need some advice, I have been out of bowling for at least 5 years. I am a scratch bowler & when I left the sport I was averaging about 195. Here is my dilemma, my last piece of equipment was a urethane ball (the grey wolf I believe)& it seems as though the "latest & greatest" is reactive resin??? I have no idea where to start when it comes to replacing my equipment, replies would be greatly appreciated as far as balls & shoes. The most important factor is performance, second would be cost (I see the sport has gotten a lot more expensive). I am not a twister, but have a decent hook.

Thanks & looking forward to getting "Back in the Game"!

Most companies have a full range of equipment. If you were with ebonite that is a good place to start. Pick an entry level reactive ball to start(I''m not up on the names).I''m just saying to start with an entry level ball to get a feel for the reactives, I think if you went right up to the high performance stuff you might not like all that hook compared to the urethane you used before. Shoes I would go with top of the line Dexter or 3G with the changeable soles and heels. No use fooling around with inferior footwear. Good luck!

I use Dexter SST 5s and swear by them, they're about 10 years old now and still going strong.

As for balls, I would say if the last ball you owned was a urethane, you're going to notice a significant difference when you get something reactive.

When you say performance, what do you mean? Do you mean you want a ball that will hook a lot? Or do you want something that will last? If the latter I'd suggest the Brunswick Copperhead, it's a proven long-lasting coverstock and would be a great place to get going, a nice piece to learn on I think.

I am looking for something that has substantial hook, I can back down from that with additional equipment.

Some of the smaller companies have made HUGE strides. Lane #1, Visonary, and Motive are all good. I have experience with visonary and Lane #1. I don't with Motive....

If you want backend reaction, look into the Blue Death from Lane #1. Very solid company, they have the absolute BEST customer service in the business in my opinion. They also produce a more even rolling ball. It is very easy to get a desired reaction out of those balls.

Price has dropped signifigantly on their stuff also.

Ebonite bought out Columbia, track and hammer in the last few years.
Storm and Roto Grip are essentially the same company.
900 Global is a very up and coming company too, (they have the AMF name under their wing too)

I find that the Hy-Road has a decent amount of hook, for me.

Do you know what kind of lanes you're going to be bowling on? What kind of oil volume? If you buy one of the super-aggressive balls, and there isn't enough oil you'll have lots of problems with roll-out/not hooking enough.

I would recommend starting with something about mid-range that you'll be able to play on drier mediums and wetter mediums, adding extras when necessary if you're finding significantly lower or higher volumes.

The Grey Wolf IS reactive resin. Not like some of the reactive bombs available today, but reactive nontheless.

If your last ball was urethane, it must have been something else.

That being said, much of the modern stuff is strong, and getting stronger with every new release.

What reaction type are you looking for?  If you are looking at "Bang for the bucks", it is hard to beat the Rotogrip Cell line. Higher performance balls with a little lower price point than many other "high performance" balls, and they have several for differing conditions from heavy oil ( the new MUTANT CELL) to a pearlized version of the original cell for lighter conditions/stronger backends. Rotogrip is made by STORM.

They aren't the only company like this. Nearly every company has a wide variety of stuff designed to cover practically every condition imaginable that you might see. Hammer is another maker (owned by Ebonite) that seems to have a versatile lineup from the Jigsaw for oil to the VIBEs for the medium and lighter conditions, even the RAZYR for the drier conditions.

Good luck in your search. There are THOUSANDS of options available today, and most are pretty good. Getting a "bad" ball really isn't nearly as likely as it used to be, but it is still possible.

I didn''t realize you wanted to start strong and go down from there. Roto Grip has a good line of balls. I''d start with the Cell (solid) and work down from there. I use Visionary they have a great Mid-Price line called Ogre from a solid to a urethane with the same core. If you get on their test staff you will get first notice on new balls and a discount price. Check it out. I think they are working on the website right now but I got the top of the line deal a couple years ago and love it. visionarybowling.com or call Betsey monday at18888272211 or 13143883446 Good Luck!
