This topic came up yesterday while drilling a ball for one of my customers.

For those in the bowling pro shop business, the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association certification is the standard in terms of bowling pro shop training, but what does it mean to you.

I am curious to hear your responses....

It means at some point they took and passed the class.

I think it's a good starting point, but it's not a guarantee they know what they are doing.

I wish there was a IBPSIA certified driller somewhat near me, but there isn't.

Granted, there are most likely some great drillers that are better at what they do than some certified people. It comes down to trust for the customer. It took me a while to find someone I trust, but I think I found him.

Some people are "book smart" and some are "street smart", book smart doesn't always translate into quality service. Just because you can sit through a class and pass a test doesn't mean you know how to service the customer.

As someone who has had this conversation with customers and pro shop owners, I will chime in with my take:

It is nice that there is a certification process. It is pricy and some shops will not spare the expense. I agree that it shold be "required reading" before someone hangs out there shingle and starts drilling bowling balls. It will never happen as there is nothing stopping a shop from setting up business and opening the doors. If it was required industry wide, then the certification would have a ton of meaning.

Since 98% of the customers who walk in the door have no idea what IPBSIA is nor what does it mean, then you will see shops not worry about whether they have that certification.

What does it mean when a shop is a IBPSIA Regular Member? Just that they pay a Membership fee to be apart of the association?

Considering I drill my own stuff and drilled a bowling ball for my friend with the double thumb drilling and we were bowling against the pro shop owner who is certified and he said theres no way that balls legal so he takes it in weighs it and then says I guess I am wrong but why would you want a weight hole in it that makes every ball hook less. I said no you are wrong and that you can gain more flare and change differential of the ball by doing so and he says I only drill balls with cg in center of grip so no weight hole is needed because weight holes make balls hook less and hit like pumpkins rather then argue I got a good laugh out of it with my friend

There are a number of good ball drillers out there that are not certified. There is also a number of really bad drillers out there are not certified. At least with the certification you have been trained by a professional organization with some of the world's best drillers. Like anything else you need to keep up and current. There are also a number of both good and bad IBPSIA drillers. The big thing is at least the driller has some training and if they are dedicated they keep up with the industry standards and new trends. I have been places where the quality of ball drilling is so bad and behind the times it's sad. One person told me the quality of drill you got depends on how much beer you bought the driller and if he was drunk already. At least IBPSIA is suppose to have standards and be professional.

LOL i know of a proshop where the more @SS you kiss, the better you get your stuff fitted and lay'd out....

I think I know the guy who started this organization if I am not mistaken. He is a nice guy, but never wowed me with his drilling. Hope others learned from being certified.

I know one thing, if I go to a different person to drill my ball, they all say that the other guy drilled it wrong, I've had many a time that after the ball was drilled it would lock up in my hand, I would try the shake the ball off and show them that it would not come off. To this day I have a problem with my ring finger, when I put my finger in, my thumb doesn't go straight into my thumbhole. I do still carry a 210 average, but really how hard is it to drill a ball that will properly fit a hand

means absolutely nothing to me
I drill my own stuff out of a close friends shop and Im not certified
I learned to drill and do layouts etc. when I was about 12 years old from my dad
who owned 2 very successful pro shops and was known as one of the best shop operators in our area,
my dad was never certified nor is his friend that owns the shop where I go to
I would take a non certified driller that has been doing this for a long time and is good at what he does over some new shop operator that took some drilling class and now thinks he knows what he's doing any day of the week
I do however know a few good shop operators that have taken the class but they have almost all said that it didnt teach them anything new they more or less took it to make the shop more professional looking to newer customers that did not know their reputation

just my opinion but its certainly not a necessity

3/8 reverse 1/8 right lateral?

Right handed drill??? Oh span that doesn't matter! I've heard of people sticking your hand in a jayhawk ball and never changing the pitches. Only thing they change is the span. The best one is the guy that put someones hand on the ball and drew circles around the fingers and thumb. Then he said that's where everything goes and drilled the ball?? There are a lot of really bad ball drillers out there. Some of the guys that have been out there for years make KMart drillers look like saints.
