LEFT HIP PAIN
« on: February 09, 2007, 02:19:01 PM »
After I bowl three or four games, my left hip joint and sometimes above my knee cap aches. Is this unique or has anyone else suffered from this problem.  Any suggestions on what might be causing it or what may help to stop it.  If I take a couple of advil before bowling, it helps, but I hate to think that I will have to take advil to bowl.

I used to have this problem, still do from time to time.  Check your shoulders vs your feet after u release the ball.  I found that my hip had to cock outward because i was twisting my upper body at release.  This put major stress on my hip & knee joints, & cause LOTS of pain.  Add to that that i had hip surgery as a child....its just not good.

The way i fixed it was slowing down.  I used to almost run to the line, causing me to twist a bit.  I have since calmed down, & learned to walk at a steady pace to the line.

Let us know if this helps

I had this problem too, my solution was to lose 50 pounds. I don't know if you are in the same position as I was or not but thats what I did and am still losing but it is great not limpin around after I bowl.....

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

You didnt say your age, but I am going on 57 and have to take 2 200mg of Ibuprofen to bowl now. I think it has something to do with arthritis and getting older. I can tell when I dont take it, my back and hips start to tighten up by the 3rd game.

Thanks for the input. I thought I was the only one with this problem as I had not seen it mentioned by anyone else on this site.
I am 45 years old, 6'1" 190lbs and in pretty good shape.

I have had two MRIs and my lower lumbar spine is in great shape. My doctor has suggested epidural blocks as I do have numbness  in the nerve above my knee cap.

I have passed on that for now and will try some of the things suggested here and let you know if they help.

Thanks again

If you have been bowling along time I feel you will have back and knee pain at sometime in your career. Depending on what you do for a living could affect that also. My back is bothering me now and I have been to a chiropractor and that helps. But also not being real old yet, you will find its not going to get better with age.

what can be in my case? im only 23

i used to have pain in my leg, from this picture my pain comes from a muscle called soleus:

http://orgs.jmu.edu/strength/KIN_425/calves-anatomy.jpg

then i started experimenting with different finish positions and find out that if i make my non-sliding let to go left as much as posible, i would be able to prevent the sliding leg from any pain, since instead of having all the weight of my body in that particular muscle, i would shift it to the hip.
it worked great, but later on i start feelin pain in my hip. i went really easy last few weeks and the pain is going away slowly, im limited to max 5 games, if i go above it i'll feel pain afterwards

I have chondromalacia patella...which basically is the kneecap rubbing against the joint during knee movement.  I've had for it awhile, went through MRI's and everything.  They say physical therapy will fix it, but not too sure.  Think I may get another opinion.

I would check your slide and timing.  I have similar pain and believe it's related to my slide (or lack thereof).  I tend to plant more than slide, so I imagine that isn't good for my left leg/knee/hip.  I also know that timing on my backswing and release are a little off, so I think that causes me to put more pressure on my slide leg.

You might also want to make sure you stretch before bowling.  I used to stretch a day or two before bowling, and again before bowling and the pain lessened.
