Backup bowler -Question
« on: June 09, 2016, 02:24:35 PM »
My wife, a right handed backup bowler, years ago bowled from right side of approach. Thinking I would use ball movement to improve carry I convinced her to move to the left side.  Currently, she sprays the ball all over and spare shooting has suffered resulting in her average dropping 15 pins over last several years. There are a lot of contributing factors including her confidence to her downfall,  she is looking to go back right and restart her game.  Thoughts, opinions and suggestions please.

Encourage her to do it.  She developed a style that works for her and has been unsuccessful trying a different style.  Let her be comfortable and you'll be a lot happier.  --  JohnP

I guessing you haven't been married long.

You've heard "You break it, you bought it".

In this case, "You break it, you'll never hear the end of it".

I suggest you find a way to extract yourself from the dilemma.

Let her do it her way.

And feel lucky she's willing to do something you enjoy, with you.

While your idea sounds well founded, you must also factor in the intangible things, and some of those are the physical abilities of the bowler thrmselves.

If she is right-handed, and you've moved her to the left side of the lane, you have effectively changed the way she sees the lane and slide area coming at her during her approach, and it sounds like that is hurting her more than the ball motion is helping.

Not everyone is supposed to be professional caliber, advanced level, or heck even very good at the game. Some people are just supposed to be what they are and enjoy it for the fun and social aspects of it.

It sounds like she has come to grips with her limitations, and is good with that. If you want her to enjoy the game, let her do it her way, then be the best at that as she can be.

As you probably now realize, the hardest thing for most bowlers of less than scratch caliber to do is move around on the approach.  Moving from 2nd arrow to the corner, or in to 3rd arrow is very uncomfortable for them.  In this case moving from one side of the approach to the other with the body alignment issues is daunting.  It would be easier to teach her to throw straight or hook the ball ( which I am not advocating ) than to make this move.

A rule I live by...Never give my wife bowling advice unless she asks and then only under protest from me.  I average 230 she averages 150 and knows more about the game then me from what she tells me.  We have been married over 20 years.

I've learned one thing about couples who bowl together. Once they have seen each other naked, they no longer have any respect for the other one's opinion about bowling.  :o ;D

This is sound advice.  I've been married three times this long now and I learned long ago never to give advice/lessons to my wife when it comes to bowling.  She could very easily be a 170+ average bowler with a slight change in her delivery, but she's happy bowling in the 150's.  When she's happy, I'm happy.  As Noah once told me, "don't rock the boat".

Thank you all for the bowling and marital advice.

Next challenge is to get her to the lanes and re-train her.  Problem we are not bowling together in the summer, her with her friends in casual league. I tried to tell her this is the best time of the year to experiment.  She recently purchased a Storm Fight after finally retiring the original Virtual Gravity, going to give her my Storm  Rocket with different layout to give her some options.  Hoping for the best and a less stressed winter session.

I would suggest getting her some lessons from a certified coach, I think he or she could help her with her game and you could be there during her lesson to encourage her or stay away whichever she is comfortable with. It sounds like she has picked up some bad habits with spraying shots and missing spares, something a coach could help with.
