Moving up to adult league
« on: January 20, 2009, 01:03:30 PM »
I have been bowling for almost 10 years now. I'm averaging 219 on THS and 206 in sport shot. Here lately i have not been trying as hard in league, for there is no more Competition. Sure there are guys you shoot high every once in awhile. I am turning 18 here soon (April), and was wondering is it a good idea to move up? Since I am not trying as hard as I should in my leagues. Should I move up, or should I stay down for more experience?

I'm glad I moved up though many argued with me on it being good or bad. It really depends on the youth program in your area, I didn't like that the closest league with more than 10 people was an hour away and that all the tournaments were over 2 hours away so I moved up when I hit 18.

There is good and bad to both, I personally enjoy being in adult leagues and the competition and opportunities I have now, but if you are going to play any sport in college you must stay youth or else you will lose your eligibility.

Really? I have had it explained to me differently in the past, I may be wrong though.

Well, it is about the same here, only a few people bowl. The top 4 youth bowlers in my city are on my team the averages go in order 209,211,206, and 219. My coach is telling me the pros and cons of moving up. He said that was the best thing he ever did was move up, when he was 16. He said is average jumped up a lot. I am still debating on it, so theres still the rest of the season and the tournaments coming up. I'm just wondering your guys input on it.

I rule book here somewhere here it states that for an eligble player they have to be in good standings with USBC.
If they are transfering from another school they have a one year period to refrain from competing.
PBA Members are not allowed to bowl unless they do not have their card for a year.

Its kind of like donating blood as long as you dont do certain things then its ok.

When your Coach moved up did they have rubber bowling balls too.  The new 400 rule makes it a dumb decision to move up unless there is nothing to bowl near you.

My coach did not move up when they had rubber bowling balls. He is only 34 and finished last season with an 237 average. There isn't much for me to bowl around here the most competition I get around here is when my coach and I practice.

Thats what I am thinking about, but I'm not going to a college. I'm going into an apprenticeship program to become an electrician.

as this being the first year of actually going adult i can tell you there is a big difference...every league night you will be bowling against some serious compeition and you will actually feel the need to compete to win each game as the prize fund at the end of league will make you want to strive to be the best you can. also, as everyone else has told me, the first year of going adult is the hardest. adjusting to the different bowling times, competition, and the lanes even breaking down compeletly different can really affect your scores at first. my average is down by 8 to 10 pins in almost every league. eventually, hopefully, you will adjust though and start bowling well against the other big shots in your town and earning a name for yourself. if you feel you are ready, then make the move, but if you dont think you are ready yet then stay youth and just keep making scholarship money. the scholarship winnings will pay off far more than winning brackets on league nights

I am in High School, I am a senior. I don't plan on going to college or anything that would restrict me from moving up. I am just wanting some help to make my mind up.

just out of curiosity, what area are you in?
