Bad pain in my slide knee
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:55:52 PM »
Does anyone else get a really bad pain in their slide knee?  If I bowl a few days in a row, I get a sharp, aching pain in my slide knee.  Hurts just about the knee, and right under and next to my knee cap.  It then starts hurting when I step up on the approach or if I ever try extending my leg straight out...it even hurts while I'm sitting down.  It was so bad today that I actually considered not finishing my 3 games.

My guess is its tendonitis, but I'm not sure.  Any help is appreciated.

used to have the same problem until i got better sliding shoes. i was having to force my slide and thus putting alot more pressure on my knee. im still young so i couldnt blame it on "old age". havent had the problem in a long time.

it could be tendonitis but it could be not sliding enough or planting your slide food. I have known people that plant instead of slide and they all have knee problems. also just getting used to bowling a few days in a row. the more you bowl the more your body gets used to it.

I have the same problem, although it never seems to effect my release, and only happens after bowling alot more than usual.

I definitely don't plant.  I use a standard heel with the #6 sole.  A good amount of slide.  I have been working on bending my knee more when I slide, which could definitely cause the extra pain.

footerson, the naproxen pill your doctor gave you is most likely aleve (naproxen sodium) and it works well for symptoms such as yours.  I used to use it but have found a more effective method that requires no pills to take.

I have dealt with knee problems with my slide leg ever since injuries playing high school football and baseball a dozen years ago.  I have had times in the past where I had to stop bowling due to not being able to put any weight on the leg after a while.  What I found that works for me is that I use a strap that I tighten up right across my my knee, just below the bend.  It keeps constant pressure on the knee, and really eliminates any pain during bowling.  The strap I use has a small gel peice in the front of it to make it a little more comfortable, and works great.  bowlallthetime, I wish you well, and hope the info helps.  The strap I use is made by nike, and can be found at most sporting goods stores.

Get a knee brace or something to tighten area around you patella tendon. Dicks sporting goods has plenty of them.

i have the same knee problem but i think mine is due to twisting at the approach, my slide foot is usually on an angle

Yeah; I live in Norway, I have/had the same type of pain too, and I use Naproxen occasionaly. It is for menstruation pain, and it works much better than paracetamol or ibuprofen for me atleast. But, I guess you are at the same age as footerson and me, 16-18 years, or somewhere, and I got better by training my hips and thighs. It was there the pain really came from for me atleast

The problem is the back of your knee cap is kinda of like a serrated knife. This is causing the pain. Your previous replies are correct, you have patella tendonitis. There are knee wrap arounds that are adjustable and will help. These will fit below your knee cap, and you will want it tight. Stretching your LEFT hamstring before bowling will also help. Patella tendonitis is what caused Mark McGuire to retire from baseball. It is painful and surgery is only for the really bad cases, and only about 50% effective. I used to be a decathalete and quit because no one would guarantee more than 50% sauces rate with surgery. I really hope this helps and wish you the best.

Mine hurts when I use a flat heel rather than a ridged one.  Might wanna try switching heels rather than slide pads.
