bad sportsmanship question...
« on: April 19, 2004, 03:33:05 AM »
How would you all react to this situation? I'm still trying to figure out what I should have said or done...

This weekend, I was bowling a team swiss tournament. One team we bowled against had a couple of members high-fiving each other if my teammates left splits, or missed spares. I was appalled...

I bowled against this team in another tournament last month, and was told that they did the same thing when one of my teammates left a solid pocket 7-10, but I didn't see it myself, or I probably would have reacted violently.

The only thing I did in this case was crumble a big 4 in the first shot of the 10th to really tick 'em off - their anchor (the instigator) whiffed a 10 pin spare, and we won the game by 3. That was sweet. And our team got real boisterous with the high fiving after the end of that game!

But seriously - how would you have reacted?

Hahaha, lmao!

I would have said "neener neener neener" and stuck my tongue out while holding my hands to the side of my head and shaking them at the bowlers, all while dancing in a big circle with my team around the other team, chanting, "Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and you suck balls!" Then I'd run up onto the lane and use it as a slip-n-slide.

That's just me though.

Over the last year I have had to make a lot of changes to my mental game and this situation would fit.  I could careless the actions of the opponent and concentrate on my game and make sure everything there is in order.  Focus on what we as a team are doing and communicate with each other.  Sometimes it is hard to ignore some one but it must be done.  Striking the pocket unphased reverses the flow against the bad sports.  If they get unrulely then make a formal complaint.

Why do anything? You would simply be lowering yourself to their level.

Besides possibly giving them “the look” when the are celebrating a bad break or shot for our team. the most I would do is to be a little louder and more boisterous when celebrating our successes. Much the same as you did high fiving each other after winning.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Hey Mumzie,

I agree with Pinbuster, just because they're idiots, you can't become one to compete.  Just let your bowling do the talking for you....

Mumzie -  You should have turned around on the lanes grab your crotch with one hand and point to that other team and yell out "WHO'S YOUR DADDY"  I bet the whole league would have died laughing and the other team would feel really bad.  The thought and sight of you doing something like that would probably affected them for the rest of the evening.  Then every time they go up to bowl just wink at them and grab your crotch and point to the lane.

Seriously though, I would have just played it out and at the end I would say good bowling with you guys better luck next time.  But be sure you have a $hiit eating grin on your face when you say it then just turn and talk to your teammates in a whisper.  They won't know what to say and it will irk the hell out of them.

If someone is blatantly cheering when one of my teammates or I either leaves a split, or misses a spare I would definitely confront them.  I'm way too competitive to deal with that type of cr*p.  I know if I were to miss a one pin spare, which I believe to be inexcuseable, and saw the other team high-fiving...someone may have to hold me back from punching them in the mouth...I would never show terrible sportsmanship to another team, and would not accept it from an opponent, especially them cheering when we do poorly...When I enter a tourny, or am just bowling in league play, I want everyone on my pair to bowl well, because that drives me to do better...it is just rediculous for someone to cheer because of the misfortunes of the other team...thats just my opinion, and I have a feeling people will not agree with how I would react, but I know me and my personality, as well as the team I typically bowl with, and that type of behavior by the other team would not be accepted, or go unnoticed...but on the other hand, I do believe the way it was handled was great, but I know I wouldn't be able to handle it that way...

Would tripping the leader as he stepped off the approach considered unsportsman like conduct???

We all come across teams like that on occasion.  I personally wouldn't give them the satisfaction of knowing that I'm bothered by their poor behaviour.

When encountering these types of teams, I usually say nothing.  I then turn to my teammates and quietly say "LET'S KICK THEIR BUTT".  A display of poor sportsmanship tends to pump me up and fuel my game.

After winning the game, I just smile and watch the other team go home with their tails between their legs.  That alone is satisfaction enough for me.

Just ignore them and "KICK 'EM TO THE CURB" like you did

im still pretty inexperienced, but i had one week in my travel league that was kinda funny. my friend and i were talking and this kid we were bowling against was in a real pissy mood. he threw a strike, my friend said good shot, and he said F@#% you. we both thought that was uncalled for, so we were talking and every once in a while we would look over at him and laugh, even though we werent talking about him. it was kinda immature, but it was funny.

I learned that a team we recently bowled was doing this behind our backs. While my teammates were quite upset about it and wanted to confront them, I thought it a waste of energy.  However, the next time we bowl them (if there's a next time), we'll all be very focused on kicking their arses.

If the snack bar sells pizza, you could have quietly rubbed a pepperoni slice in their thumbholes while pretending to look for your ball!  Get that sucker good and greasy and see how they bowl then!

Interesting after note -
After the competition was over, I spoke with one of the team members. This woman was from a different town, and had never bowled with the two particular trouble makers. She said that the competition got really unfriendly the second day, and she couldn't figure out why it seemed like no one liked them. I clued her in on what her teammates were doing behind her back. Now she understands the attitude! She told me that if she'd seen it, she would have called them on it herself.

Bouwens - I don't know if they're bowling or not.
It was only a couple of the women on the team...
Message me if you're interested in the names. Where are you from? Who are you bowling with? I'm not bowling that tourney....
