Choosing Teammates
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:45:15 AM »
I am not sure how everyone else feels about this, but how do you determine who your teammates will be for a league?

I know many people have a set of friends and family they choose from, but what happens when you want to join a league and are short a member or two?

My brother and I wanted to bowl a league together (meaning on the same team) and inquired at a bowling center to see if a particular league had any openings for 2 men.  We chose this league because 1. my brother's friends backed out at the last minute and 2. our parents bowl in the league.  After consulting the secretary about the league, she said they had a couple of teams looking for 2 members.

We show up Friday, first night of league, and let the secretary know we are there to bowl.  Come to find out, there are no teams that need 2 bowlers.  So obviously, we don't bowl.  But here is the intriguing part...

During the first game, there are 2 teams with 2 vacancies for the first night.  My first thought is the other members aren't available for the first night and a vacancy is used till they bowl.  But upon further review, they don't have 2 members but don't want us to bowl with them.  I realize this is a long winded explanation of my particular experience, but I felt a little jilted.  I am a 215-225 bowler and subbed once in the league last year and shot 823.  My brother is a decent 185 average bowler without coaching and was looking forward to working with me and improving his game.  I was wondering if anyone else has dealt with this or has been that team that didn't want the two available bowlers.

With very few exceptions, I will bowl with anyone that shows up to put money in the envelope every week.  To date I have found three people I won't bowl with, no matter how reliable they are, just because I don't like them.  But for the most part, I look for reliability.  Someone who shows up on time and is ready to bowl and doesn't incur the wrath of our extremely loud secretary asking why so-and-so is two weeks behind on lineage.

We gave one guy the boot this year after all the fits he threw last year, we replaced him with a bowler who wants to bowl and doesn't throw fits.  He may have a lower average but it is well worth it not to put up with all the antics.

I say this because this is a league where I really don't know anyone.  It seems like the "good 'ol boy network" and if they don't know you, you're not bowling with them.  Kinda pissed me off, but I can understand (only a little) where people don't want to bowl with people they don't know anything about.

1- They can't act like an idiot!
2- They are reliable. Pay each week, show up on time, etc.

The rest I can work with.

We took two guys this year on our team that none of us knew. AND they had never bowled in a league before. I think you just ran into "a league of extrodinary @ss' ".  Keep searching you will be able to find a team.

I subbed in a league last year with a buddy of mine.  we both avg. about 220-230.   It was a mixed league and we would sub for fun and practice.

This year we decided to join the league, both on different teams, and 2 teams dropped out, because of the higher averages in the league.   Another one of our friends also joined who averages around 215.

It's just for fun, but people don't like high average bowlers in their leagues.

The most important aspect of team members to me is ATTENDANCE! Doesn't matter how good they are, if they do not show up, or are consistently late or don't have the money every week, they will NOT be on my team.

Since most of us bowl primarily in handicap leagues, as long as they try their hardest it will be OK.

Second is their willingness to be ready when it is their turn to bowl, not outside smoking, 20 lanes away smoozing with somebody or spreading the bull, or in the toilet.

Other than those things, as long as they are reasonably human, it is OK.
