Bagging in league
« on: January 31, 2008, 06:19:59 AM »
I was bowling last night again a team that is known for bagging.  They generally bag the weeks coming up to tournaments.  I am not one to point out bagging or blame someone for bagging.

On this night however it was pretty apparent.  I was watching the lead bagger, throw the beer frame with pose and balance with a good follow through, however on the other frames he was slowing down and not following though.  He was appearing to be just lazly throwing the ball down the lane.

After about 5 or 6 times of watching this I asked him:  "If you are going to bag, please don't make it so obvious.  We all see what is going on here and I would appreciate it if you would not make it so obvious"

That cause there entire team to blow up and start yelling at me, which was kind of of humorous.

Is this something you guys would consider taking the next step and actually reporting or just keep making them angry?

If it's going to cost you money at the end of the season I would report them.  That's BS in my opinion.

It isn't really going to cost me anything, we win the league every year.  They are only doing it to get there average down at nationals and regional tournaments.

Go ahead and report it.....then prove it.

I dislike sandbaggers as much as the next honest bowler, but you just can't prove that it is sandbagging.

We have a team in our league that does that.  When they are getting knocked around they start hooking the ball at the 7 pin, then looking around like how did I throw it that bad.  Then if they leave whatever they leave, they will miss the entire thing.

Getting sometimes 4 counts and things.

It is pathetic.

I'm not the type of person to go tattle.  I would probably end up starting a huge argument in the middle of league the minute one of them said anything remotely close to a brag.  With that said I'm sure you aren't the only one that knows this, maybe talk to some others in the league.

I mean how do you go about proving it, what if like 25 guys in the league signed a partition stating what they have all seen?

What does it take to keep people honest?

It is just easier making them really mad so they bowl bad unintentionally.

Monday night we bowled a team who's lead-off bowler came in with a 222 ave and was averaging 220.  Although, when I last looked at his average before he was going to bowl us, it was at 213. His series for the week prior was like 470.   Then watching him bowl, I thought, "this guy is sand-bagging".  I mentioned it in a soft voice to our bowlers just to see what they would say.  They said nothing.

Luckly before I put my foot in my mouth, one of their team mates spoke up and said wow he is going to shoot 500.  He hasn't shot over 500 since his operation 4 weeks ago.

LOL. I wish I was there to see that. We call people baggers all the time but they don't get upset because they are not baggers. These TEA BAGGERS in your league get upset because they know what they are doing and have to defend it.

Unfortunately there is no way to prove sandbagging unless they admit it. They will always have an excuse however lame it may be.

A way to limit sandbagging or at the least make them think about it is to have a match series point. Better yet, make the match series point 2 points.

It's not what you know to be true, it's what you can prove to be true. Good luck proving sandbagging.

Luckyily the only league I bowl in is a little 12 team league that splits nights on tues/wed because the Elks only has 6 lanes.  Nearly everyone gets in the high game pots and card games so there is alot of competition and no reason to be a huge bagger.

A sandbagger is never obvious, a inept bowler is always obvious. Sandbagging like bowling ability is a matter of opinion and in the eye of the beholder which is why it is very difficult to prove. I know some who think anyone who carries below a 200 average in league(THS)is a bagger because they think it is so easy to do.
