balance
« on: July 17, 2008, 12:10:16 PM »
I have another question about another imortant part of my game. I was wondering what other parts of my approach contributes to my balance at the foul line. I've found that a good pushaway is helpful if you want to post shots at the foul line. Is there anything besides a pushaway that helps?

Your balance arm and trail leg act as a counter-balance to the weight of the ball on the other side of your body.  Those, plus decent timing should give you good balance.

Make sure you use your trail leg well as a counterbalance and be sure that you are getting under your center of gravity. Your last step/slide step should be slightly to the right(if your RH) to put yourself in the best position for leverage and balance.

Arm and training leg are very important, as mentioned above, then you shoudl also make sure to keep your upper body upward, on a vertical line with your sliding foot's end position. Ideally, your sliding foot ends up under your body's CG after the slide and delivery, while arm an training leg give a counter balance. That's a very stable end position that is easy to maintain once the ball is gone. If you fall off to one side or bend too much forward (normally, your trailing leg does not hit the ground or ends up behind your body, not further), something is IMHO fishy.

Knee bend is important. If you bend too much at the waist, you'll find yourself off-balance at the foul line.

Eliminating the muscle from your swing is a huge help for balance as well. It is much easier to remain in a fixed, balanced position when you're not pulling the ball down from the top of the swing, trying to start a lawnmower at the bottom of the swing, and rearing up at the line.
