Balance at the line question
« on: December 06, 2010, 11:55:00 PM »
As I get older (older than dirt really) I seem to have more and more trouble with my balance.  I usually fall off to the right and sometimes way off.  I did notice that a lot of senior bowlers appear to have the same problem.  My shots are ok but falling off really bothers me.  Have any of you senior bowlers had this problem and, if so, what did you do to correct it?  I also notice that I take shorter and shorter steps now than I used to.  Don't know if age has something to do with that or not.

Thanks for the help.

I wonder if some kind of workout regimine would help....?  Not like getting in there and getting after some lifting but maybe light lifting, or some squats with a small load on...?

Here's some good explanations of why one falls off the shot.  This should help.

Techincally I am a senior having turned 50 this year. Yes, I fall off at the line more frequently than every. Or at least until I practiced again maintining my balance. My problem is associated with the fact that my skills despite bowling competitively for 30 years have deminished along with my flexability. Working on the proper body position at the finish line has restored my "sticking the landing".

Dont try to pull the ball from the top so much...Letting the ball fall into the swing will make things much smoother and more balanced

Sometimes if you let your head come up to the left (as a right handed bowler) you will fall off to the right.  Try and keep a slight tilt (bowling shoulder) lower than the balance shoulder and don't let your head come up and to the left (non bowling shoulder side)

I'd guess that a lack of knee flexibility is one of the error sources. If you cannot balance your body's weight on your sliding foot, you will easily tip over, or you bend forward at the waist. There are some senior bowlers in my league who have this problem, too. Not sure if you can correct this at all!?

Ditto for me. My balance problems have gradually gotten worse the last 3 years with the current year the worse yet.

I have the same problem that Dizzy describes here. Lack of the knee flexability that I once had has been a big problem for me the last 3-4 years. Can't seem to swing my trailing foot behind my sliding foot and balance myself at the foul line anymore either. This in turn seems to also cause the ball to be further than it should be from my sliding foot at delivery, thus costing me leverage as I release the ball.

As I've gotten older I seldom practice.  When I was in my 20's, 40 - 50 games a week was common, now it's 6 in league.  It's harder to keep the precise timing required to post the shot.  --  JohnP
