Videos of my on-lane lesson with Jason Belmonte
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:13:35 AM »
For those that may not have realized, for the past year or so, I have been working with members of the USBC Coaching team to attempt a conversion from one-handed to two-handed bowling. A few months back, Jason Belmonte was in town for a USBC Coaching event, and he was nice enough to spend an afternoon working with me on my two-handed game. If you're interested in Jason or two-handed bowling in general, follow this link: http://www.bowl.com/coaching/two-handed.jsp and click the "video" link located in the Media area near the bottom of the page. There, you will find six video clips of Jason and I from that day.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, etc., please feel free to message or post. Thanks.

Dude! Good job, with the lessons and all!

Looks like you are a natural fish, taking to water. You look pretty relaxed, considering this is your first time trying this.

Just a bit of advice, be sure and keep your head up, so as to keep that Fuller brush on your chin, outta the way on your backswing!! : )

Lucky arse!!!    I would give both my hands to be able to spend some time chatting and bowling with Belmo.  LOL!!  Nice vids and continued success with the new style.

Thanks for the kind words, Jesse. The goatee got trimmed back a little, so I don't think it's as big of a problem right now. Still, I'll keep my eye on it. I don't want any accidents! lol

Twohand, yes, you are certainly correct when you say that I'm a lucky guy. Working with Jason was a really great experience. He is a very sharp guy, and he couldn't be nicer. Working with him is definitely something I won't soon forget. Plus, seeing/hearing his ball in person is truly something special as well. Watching him on video is cool, but seeing that power up close is totally different. It's just plain sick!

Gene,

That's pretty sweet.  While I myself do not use the two handed style, my son does/did.

I'm going to send you a p.m. about my son. You might find it interesting.

Thanks for sharing Gene!  These videos are awesome.

Belmo seems like a great guy and a pretty good coach too. Also, from the first video to the last you can see your game got quite a bit smoother from start to finish.  Tear those lanes up!

Juggernaut,

I replied to your pm, and you were right. That was an interesting, albeit sort of sad, story.

Zanatos,

We filmed that lesson in the Splittsville location in the Arlington Highlands. It's more of a night club than a bowling center, but it is a very nice place, and the people there were great. I keep telling myself I have to go back to pay the place a visit during normal club hours. It seems pretty cool.

Noodle,

Yeah, Belmo is a great coach and a very nice guy. He told me several times that I can feel free to contact him with any questions I have. I mean, here's a guy going through his first full year on Tour, and he's offering to help me out. Plus, he even took the time to enter the Project Two Hands forum on bowl.com to comment on one of my threads. Nobody asked him to do it. He just took an interest and decided to chime in. Again, he just seems like an overall class act.

As for my bowling, even though it doesn't always feel like it, things have definitely improved over time. I still struggle with certain things, but my overall shot-making ability has gotten a great deal better. I don't think I'm on the heels of Belmo, Osku, or Cassidy, but I still see two-handed bowling being a part of my bag of tricks for a long time coming.

Very nice videos, you are a lucky guy!!

I have been toying with the idea of trying this style out (for a lot of the same reasons as you) and your story has "re-inspired" me so to speak to seriously try it out.

BTW, Good luck in Reno, I hope you bowl well.

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm excited for Reno. I'm not going out there expecting to shoot 2,000 or anything, but I feel ready to give it my best. No matter what, it should be fun. For those interested in this sort of thing, here is the equipment I will have with me:

Raw Hammer Jacked - pin above ring, cg mostly stacked, box finish
Onyx Vibe - Pin under ring, cg toward grip center, 2000 abralon (dull)
Hyroad - Pin above ring, cg kicked slightly right - 2000 abralon (dull)
Reign - Pin above ring, cg toward grip center - box finish
Razyr - Recommended drilling - 500/4000 (matte)
Natural - Pin above and right of ring, cg right of grip center, box finish

We'll see what happens!

Thanks for the support, guys. It's been a really interesting experience thus far, and the Open Championships should be no exception. Rest assured, good, bad, or indifferent, I'll let everyone know how it went.

Ryan,

The problem I see with most recreational two-handers is that they don't have the ability to get enough ball speed. That's where technique and, most importantly, flexibility come in. If you watch the truly talented two-handers out there, you will notice that they are able to get their arms fully extended across their chests and back straight behind them. That creates a huge flat spot in their swings, which leads to high ball speed and a ton of revs.

I lift weights, so my chest has a little bit of bulk, and my arms haven't always been the most flexible either. That's why it was so important for me to work with USBC Exercise and Strength Conditioning Specialist Nick Bohanan. He helped me develop greater flexibility, and that went a long way toward helping my swing. So, I guess what I'm getting at is that if you have designs on trying out two-handed bowling as more than just a hobby, get working on increasing your flexibility. That will get you off to a good start. From there, get yourself lined up with a good coach!
