last night at my friday night league we were informed that nys is going to try and tax bowling a 4% fee on everyone that bowls.. open bowling and league bowling, Iam curious how other people from different states would react if this were to happen in their home state?? slashrr69

Don't the centers there already have to charge a sales tax? The only way I could see the NY govt. being able to get away with putting a tax on a specific activity like this is if the centers do not pay a sales tax.

I'm just bringing this up because here, in S.D., the centers have a sales tax that they just figure in to the lineage. The customer doesn't even "see" the tax added on.

Arstine has it right in that bowling is already taxed but it is included in the price of lineage.

property tax, employment tax, sales tax etc are rolled in.

this tax would probably only be against lineage. not 50/50, not prize funds, not secretary fees.

Mandatory 50/50? Why not just increase the prize fund fee? Never heard of mandaorty 50/50.

USBC has no say in this. The are a rules and reglutory body. The BPAA would be a better lobbyist and have the proprietors interest at heart.

You can argue about the values of an additional tax all you want. But be careful when you advocate murder when you disagree with someone as I'm sure someone disagrees with you.

By your logic, those are also "rentals", rentals of the property for the time in which it takes to complete the game. Anybody can walk into a public park and play a game of flag football without having to pay for the time they're using the park.

Bowling already has a set fee (whatever the center charges for lines and open play, plus dues and other fees) and shouldn't be taxed when other recreational activities can be enjoyed for free in any public place. This looks to me more like singling bowling out.

Your logic is flawed, and the more accurate question is why should every other activity be excluded?

Actually it is your logic that is flawed. A bowling center is not public property or publicly owned. It is a private business that is liable to pay sales tax on services, or items that are provided.

Your taxes pay for the public parks and rec areas, so they should be free of charge, and if they aren't there is a small fee, and your tax money that goes to them serves as the tax on the usage.

You are comparing apples to oranges.

This problem is all over the state, and Eliot Spitzer isn't the person responsible. It's the idiot George Pataki, who never cut spending and just pushed all the tax increases down to the local level.

This state is almost bankrupt. Anyone living here who did not expect some actions like this had better get their head out of the sand and look around a bit.

Is it fair to bowlers? No. But life isn't fair. Get over it.
