Ball Differentials
« on: February 12, 2015, 01:41:22 PM »
I only bowl in one house and on THS lanes. I normally have mostly pin under ball drillings and pin placement from under bridge to under RF and under but outside of RF a wee bit with cg out to various amounts and usually a P3 hole.

With those type drillings, the balls seem to work best for me if the balls have a differential in the area of .045 and up.

I am looking at the Motiv Panic with a rg of 2.58 and a differential of only .023

Is there any chance of this ball working for me with that low of differential?

I am not sure which ball you are referring to but yes it is possible.  A lower differential ball would work better in that case case if you are looking for control on the breakdown.   You may also be able to use more surface with that type of layout on a lower differential ball.  There are other factors at play including your rev rate to ball speed ratio, tilt, axis rotation, and lane conditions in question.   Typical house conditions can be all over the map.  Given your history the more surface and more aggressive the cover the more likely it is to work well for you.

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with that particular ball.  I would consult your local pro shop operator for recommendations as he may have a better picture of your particular ball roll and match up statistics.  I would think that it may be a little long on the fresh with the statistics listed.  Maybe one of the motiv guys can chime in and give you some further help.  Charlest or Rico may have some perspective as well.  If you have any further questions I can help with in regards to pro shop analysis, bowling, or Brunswick equipment please do not hesitate to ask.

Brick, did you throw the Venom Shock?

Milo, I haven't thrown the Shock. Only the Primal Rage, Primal Scream, Thrash Frenzy, and (ugh) the Octane. I have an Email in right now to Justin at Motiv.

Ah, ok. You might want to check out a used Venom Strike, Toxin or Shock to see how it works for you. You should be able to get one for $20 or so since the list price of that series is so low.

I should have checked my Email before posting.

Justin of Motiv sent me a suggested drilling for the Panic and added that I might have to adjust the surface. Also a drilling for the Vengeance since I am looking at that ball also.

Also a drilling for the Octane if I want to try plugging and re drill it.

I just worry about the low differential on the Panic. I guess the bottom line is that my Primal Scream worked, Rage worked, Thrash Frenzy worked and Octane didn't and scared of the Panic not working but guess I won't know until I try.

I didn't care for the Octane but I love the Venom Line. I've had good results with that core even back with the GT1.

The ball will be fine.  Adjust surface as needed to tweak the reaction.
